Introduction

This examination is being given to fill two limited term vacancies at the Stockton Metropolitan Airport and to establish a referral pool to fill future vacancies. TYPICAL DUTIES

* Maintains grounds in parks and landscaped areas; cultivates and fertilizes grounds; plants, mows, rakes, and irrigates lawn areas; plants trees, shrubs, and flowers; performs ornamental and other types of pruning; applies pesticides.

* Maintains, repairs, and performs custodial services to park buildings and facilities, including drinking fountains, restrooms, picnic facilities, playgrounds and playing fields, fences and other fixtures; constructs park facilities and other projects requiring rough carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, and other work.

* Installs and maintains manual and automated irrigation systems.

* Cleans park areas and facilities; replenishes supplies.

* Operates a variety of maintenance tools and equipment, including power tools, sprayers, mowers, fertilizers, trenchers, power-boats, tractors, trucks and other equipment; performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.

* Ensures compliance with department rules and regulations to protect and preserve natural features.

* Requests and obtains needed equipment and supplies; maintains records of materials used, work completed, and equipment operations and maintenance.

* Supervises general relief crews, temporary employees, alternative work program crews, and others assigned to park areas; may act as lead worker over others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EITHER PATTERN I

Education: Completion of 30 semester units at an accredited college or university with a minimum of 12 units in ornamental horticulture, forestry, park or recreation management, environmental resources, landscape architecture or a closely related field.

OR PATTERN II

Experience: One-year maintaining, repairing and constructing park grounds, facilities, commercial landscaping, or similar areas.

License: Possession of a valid California driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE

Methods and techniques for caring for plants and lawns, including planting, cultivation, fertilizing and pruning; general maintenance and construction practices; methods, materials, tools, and practices used in park grounds and facilities maintenance.

ABILITY

Work independently; follow oral and written instructions; perform a wide variety of grounds, custodial, and facilities maintenance work; use tools and operate equipment used in park maintenance and development; maintain records; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; lead others.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Mobility-Sitting and standing for extended periods, driving, walking, pushing/pulling, bending/squatting, operate heavy equipment, climbing ladders, climbing stairs, and crawling; Lifting-Occasionally lift up to 70 plus pounds or restraining or lifting heavy objects or people; Vision-Good overall vision, color perception, eye/hand coordination, depth perception, occasional reading of close-up work; Dexterity-Normal dexterity; Hearing/Talking-Occasional hearing and talking on the telephone or radio and in person; Emotional/Psychological-Occasional decision making, concentration, public contact, working alone, exposure to hazardous materials, trauma, and emergency situations; Environmental Conditions-Occasional exposure to in-door climate; frequent exposure to out-door environment; contact with hazardous materials; may require occasional overtime, weekend or evening work.

Selection Procedures

Applicants for part-time and temporary recruitments who meet the minimum qualifications are either referred to the hiring department for further selection or they may be required to take a written examination. If a written examination is given, the top candidates may be referred to the hiring department for further selection.

Physical Exam: Some classifications require physical examinations. Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the physical examination. The County pays for physical examinations administered in its medical facilities.

Pre-employment Drug Screening Exam: Some classifications require a new employee successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen as a condition of employment. Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the drug screen. The County pays for the initial drug screen.

Employment of Relatives: Applicants who are relatives of employees in a department within the 3rd degree of relationship, (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) either by blood or marriage, may not be appointed, promoted, transferred into or within the department when:

* They are related to the Appointing Authority, or

* The employment would result in one of them supervising the work of the other

Department Heads may establish additional limitations on the hiring of relatives by departmental rule.
