The Public Works, Facilities & Parks Department seeks candidates for Parks Building and Grounds Worker II to perform a variety of visitor service support activities at an assigned County Park. County parks are located in both North and South County and include San Lorenzo Park in King City, Royal Oaks Park in Watsonville, Jacks Peak Park in Monterey, and Toro Park in Salinas. Position vacancies for all park locations will be filled using the eligibility list established by this recruitment. Typical duties include unskilled and semi-skilled grounds and facility maintenance work such as routine gardening and landscaping, road and concrete maintenance, minor carpentry, electrical, and plumbing repairs, cleaning of restrooms, and visitor services such as fee collection and customer relations.The Eligible List established by this recruitment process may be used to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time, part-time, or temporary basis County-wide. Examples of Duties
  • Performs unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks on roads, buildings, grounds, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, equipment vehicles and lake structures; assists with building and repair of fences, gates, sheds, buildings and other woodworking related projects.
  • Operates grounds keeping equipment such as power edger, aerator, renovator, chainsaw, wood chipper, power sprayer, augers, rototiller, picks, shovels, riding power mower and other related equipment.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment such as 4-wheel drive, dump trucks, asphalt sprayer, garbage truck, motor grader and backhoe; may be required to transport heavy equipment.
  • Visually inspects park area for cleanliness, adequate supplies, safety hazards, vandalism, damage and future maintenance projects needs.
  • Responds verbally to the public concerning park operations and facilities.
  • Assists in the supervision of the work of Park Services Aides, volunteers and other work crews.
  • Performs concrete work such as constructing sidewalks, stepping stones, ramp ways, retaining walls, patios, catch basins, framing and footings.

  • Routine landscaping and grounds keeping techniques planting, mowing, watering, spraying, fertilizing
  • Tools, materials and equipment used in landscaping and grounds keeping work
  • Safe work practices related to the maintenance, repair, operation and care of landscaped and paved area
  • The use of specialized park maintenance equipment
  • The use of fertilizers and herbicides
  • Irrigation systems
  • Semi-skilled carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, truck and tractor operation
  • Hydraulic principles related to pumps and water systems
  • The maintenance and repair of water systems, fences, signs, tables, benches, barbeques, cabinets
  • Construction and maintenance of trails and roads
  • Pruning and irrigation
  • Repair and maintenance of parks facilities and infrastructure work
  • Proper tool usage and equipment operations
  • Complex level carpentry, plumbing and landscaping

Skill and Ability to:
  • Use and operate hand and power tools commonly used in landscaping, grounds keeping, electrical, plumbing, and carpentry work
  • Perform grounds keeping work to include the transplanting, cultivation, pruning, trimming, spraying and fertilization of lawns, plants, shrubs and trees
  • Read, comprehend and write English at a level sufficient to perform typical building and grounds maintenance and repair and understand and carry out verbal and written direction
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Safely and effectively operate tools and equipment; recognize safety issues and take appropriate action
  • Work independently
  • Recognize and maintain sanitary conditions
  • Perform moderately heavy manual labor
  • Plan, organize, control and evaluate a maintenance project
  • Plan the time and materials needed to complete small construction projects

An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:Experience:Two (2) years' experience in the maintenance and development of park, farm or ranch land, performing customer service and unskilled to semi-skilled building maintenance, landscaping, grounds, and facility clean-up, maintenance, and repair work.Additional InformationREQUIRED CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENTThe required conditions of employment include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Possess a valid California Class C driver license at the time of appointment and possess and maintain a satisfactory driving record or provide evidence of suitable transportation which is approved by the appointing authority.
  • Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency; travel out of County to attend meetings.
  • Operate a manual transmission equipped vehicle
  • Wear a uniform and safety protection equipment
