Performs immediate supervisory work involving the maintenance and repair of turf, shrubs, ballfields and the construction of park amenities belonging to the County. Duties may also include performing general park maintenance, operating heavy equipment, preparing reports, field troubleshooting and other assigned responsibilities. Performs other duties as assigned
~ Supervises the construction, planting, trimming and maintenance of turf, shrubs, trees and other grounds areas belonging to the County.
~ Makes recommendations to the Foreman on annual fiscal needs for the assigned district for the development of the Parks budget. Completes appropriate purchase requests according to purchasing guidelines for equipment repairs and basic grounds maintenance needs.
~ Directs the removal of snow and leaf collection within district according to management plans.
~ Submits evaluations and development plans for assigned employees to the area foreman for review and execution.
~ Supervises mowing and/or landscape operations.
~ Follows OSHA guidelines to instruct employees on the safe operation of equipment, the proper use of safety equipment provided by the County, and the safe use of materials, such as pesticides/herbicides and fertilizers, provided by the County.
~ Operates equipment such as a dump truck, backhoe, grader, track loader, tractors and implements and power mowers.
~ Supervises the use and minor repair of all types of equipment used for grounds construction and maintenance work.
~ Makes planning recommendations to the foreman and directly constructs drainage for ballfields and parks.
~ Provides feedback to the Park Foreman on the construction of park equipment and facilities such as playgrounds and backstops.
~ Supervises the layout, marking or painting of fields and courts for various sports.
~ Maintains time and materials records on weekly work schedules and special projects.
~ Inspects landscape beds and provides basic care for all plant material.
~ Subject to 24 hour call during emergencies and/or snow removal operations.
~ Assists the Parks Maintenance Foremen in the development of the grounds weekly work schedule, winter projects, and special project/event support to the park and grounds operations.
Education
Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience
Required: One year experience in direct supervision of employees, quality control and evaluation of work.
Preferred: Some experience preferred in the maintenance of parks, grounds, and landscaping preferably in an organization providing parks and recreation facilities to the public.
Certifications/ Licenses
Required: Valid Virginia Class A Commercial Driver's license with an air brake certification and good driving record. Possess or obtain within six months of hire: Pesticide Operators License issued by the State Department of Agriculture; Contractor Certificate from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation for Erosion and Sediment Control
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Thorough knowledge of the use, adjustment, maintenance and minor repair of mechanical equipment;
* Thorough knowledge of safety practices and procedures involving equipment and materials;
* Field knowledge sufficient to estimate equipment and material needs for budget preparations.
* Skill in planning, organizing, scheduling and monitoring the work of others.
* Ability to follow procedures and keep records and reports in an accurate manner.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors and public.
* Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
* Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
* Ability to maintain turf equipment including aerators, tractors, mowers, trucks, trailers, and graders.
Additional Requirements
Subject to a complete criminal history and Child Protective Services background search with acceptable results. Good physical condition. Must pass a post offer physical examination. Must complete training in First Aid, CPR and Defensive Driving. Must be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description. Must be able to work varied shifts as assigned.
