THE AGENCY

The General Services Agency (GSA) is made up of Fleet Services, Facilities, Procurement, Special Services, Security and Business Support, and the Parks Department. The agency is responsible for a broad spectrum of services to all the County departments and agencies. It requires a very diverse workforce to accomplish the GSA mission of contributing to the quality of life in Ventura County by partnering with their customers to provide expertise and cost-effective service delivery, and foster the preservation of natural resources.

THE POSITION

Under supervision (level I and II), direction (level III), the Parks Maintenance Worker I/II/III performs a variety of routine maintenance, construction, and landscaping tasks on County parks' facilities; performs custodial duties; operates trucks and other motorized equipment as needed, and performs related work as required. Level III may act as limited on site supervisor and assist in training new employees.

The ideal candidate is experienced in all phases of routine maintenance, construction, and landscaping demonstrated by recent, applicable experience. In addition, they work well with others and ensure high customer service standards are met.

PAYROLL TITLES AND APPROXIMATE SALARIES:

Maintenance Worker I: $17.92 - $25.06

Maintenance Worker II: $19.78 - $26.56

Maintenance Worker III: $21.20 - $29.72

WHAT WE OFFER

The County of Ventura offers an attractive compensation and benefits package that includes:

* A general salary increase of 3.5% effective December 22, 2024.

* Merit Increases - New employees are eligible for an initial 5% merit increase within the pay range upon completion of at least 1,040 hours (approximately 6 months) assuming work meets satisfactory standards. Subsequent merit increases within the pay range will be upon completion of each additional 2,080 hours (approximately one year) from the initial merit increase.

* Educational Incentive - An educational incentive of 2.5% for completion of an associate's degree, 3.5% for completion of a bachelor's degree, OR 5% for completion of a graduate degree.

* Bilingual Incentive - Incumbents may be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill.

* Vacation Accrual - New regular, full-time employees shall accrue approximately 14 days of vacation a year for the first 10,400 hours or 5 years of service; vacation accruals increase at 5, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 20 years of service topping out at 26 days a year and 400 hours of vacation hours banked.

* Annual Leave Redemption - After 14,560 hours of continuous County service an employee may elect to cash in or redeem up to 80 hours of vacation accrued in the same year after using 80 hours of vacation in the preceding 12 months.

* Sick Leave - Full time regular employees accrue 3.08 hours of sick leave per bi-weekly pay period with an advance at hire of 40.04 hours which will be balanced at the completion of 13 bi-weekly pay periods.

* Deferred Compensation - Eligible to participate in the County's 401(k) Shared Savings Plan and/or the Section 457 Plan. This position is eligible for up to a 3.00% match on your 401(k) contributions.

* Health Plans-Full time employees are given a flexible credit allowance to offset the purchase of medical, dental, and/or vision insurance for you and your dependents.

* Flexible Spending Accounts - Pre-tax benefit towards eligible medical, dental and vision care and/or dependent care expenses.

* Pension Plan - Participation in the County's defined benefit pension plan, which has reciprocity with CalPERS.

* Holidays - 12 paid days per year which, includes a scheduled floating holiday.

* Additional Benefits - Tuition Reimbursement, Disability Plans, Employee Assistance Program, Life Insurance, Wellness Program.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for this and similar positions only. Maintenance Worker I/II/III is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and is eligible for overtime compensation.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

* Performs custodial duties, as needed, including cleaning restrooms, showers, covered picnic areas, floors, walls and windows; picks up trash and changes trash can liners; cleans off or paints over graffiti;

* Performs various skilled and semi-skilled tasks connected with the maintenance of park facilities and grounds involving framing, plastering, masonry, tiling, flooring, roofing and painting related to doors, locks, restroom partitions, concrete barbecue pits, tables, overhead shelters, gates, wood and chain link fences, and railings;

* Plants, transplants, and maintains trees and shrubs; plants flowers and lawns; fertilizes and applies herbicides, etc. and pesticides; and performs mechanical weed control;

* Drives light trucks and operates a variety of motorized equipment, including tractors, mowers, trenchers, chippers and high-lifts;

* Operates, makes minor adjustments to, and may be required to repair tools, and equipment, such as chain saws, hedge trimmers, and weed trimmers;

* Installs and maintains irrigation systems, including programming controllers, diagnosing valve and electrical problems, replacing or repairing water lines, valves and sprinkler heads;

* Installs and repairs electrical and plumbing systems, and interior fixtures such as toilets, sinks, and showers; clears sinks, sewer lines, toilets, floor and shower drains;

* Prepares and maintains a variety of records including work orders (level I//II/III), pesticide reports (levels II/III), and work furlough records (levels II/III);

* Diagnoses and repairs coin operated shower equipment;

* Performs other related duties as required.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of education, training and experience which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. The required knowledge, skills and abilities can be obtained by:

Maintenance Worker I - One (1) year of experience in general construction, facilities maintenance, grounds maintenance or landscape maintenance.

Maintenance Worker II - Two (2) years of responsible experience in facilities maintenance, general construction, grounds maintenance and/or landscape maintenance.

Maintenance Worker III - Three (3) years of responsible experience in facilities maintenance, general construction work, grounds maintenance, and/or landscape.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

* Possession of a valid California Class C driver license

* Ability to work weekends and holidays as required

* Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

* Ability to operate safely a variety of motorized equipment, including tractors, mowers, trenchers, chippers and high-lifts

* Ability to walk and work safely on uneven and unstable surfaces

* Some experience with:

* Installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems including programming controllers;

* Making minor adjustments to and repairing tools and equipment, such as chain saws, hedge trimmers, and weed trimmers, etc.;

* Interacting with the public.

DESIRED

* Some experience repairing coin operated shower equipment

* Bilingual (English/Spanish)

* Possession of a valid California Class A license

Supplemental Information

* Work schedule is a 9/80 with varied days, such as Thursday through Monday, Wednesday through Sunday, or Monday through Friday. Weekends and holidays may be assigned as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

Some to considerable knowledge of: installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems and programming of controllers; tools, materials and equipment used in the maintenance and construction trades, and landscape work; common plants, turf, trees and their care; the proper operation of gas and battery powered equipment normally associated with maintenance and construction activities and a variety of motorized and mobile construction and landscape equipment; and safety related to maintenance, construction, and landscape work.

Some to considerable skill in: tasks involved in the construction, maintenance and repair of barbecue pits, shelters, fences, restroom facilities, and other grounds related structures; and performing plant care.

Some ability to: perform basic mathematical calculations.

Some to considerable ability to: perform carpentry, electrical repairs, painting, plumbing and cement work; make minor adjustments to and repair tools and equipment, such as chain saws, hedge trimmers, and weed trimmers, and coin operated shower equipment; provide custodial services, as needed; and serve in a lead/on-site supervisor capacity and to train others (level III).

Considerable ability to: follow oral and written instructions; maintain routine time and work records; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees and the general public.

Applicants must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
