Salary : $36,489.00 - $38,313.00 AnnuallyLocation : Virginia, VAJob Type: Full-TimeJob Number: 711111Department: Parks & Recreation Opening Date: 08/01/2024Position Description This position is responsible for performing daily duties in support of the maintenance and repair of Parks and Recreation parks, trails, and athletic fields for programmed use. The position focuses on infield maintenance on County owned ball fields. Typical hours are Monday-Friday, from 7:30am to 3:30pm, including some nights and weekends, pending scheduled tournaments and events. Reliable, consistent attendance is essential to this position. Position Objectives
- Focus is on infield maintenance and repair (lips, mounds, bases, batters' boxes, and general infield care)
- Responsible for independently maintaining park projects and fieldwork.
- Performs daily field preparation for field activities, restroom cleanup, sports complex cleaning, and transporting of equipment. Collects litter and garbage from County Park property and trails.
- Maintains assigned tools and equipment by performing regular cleaning, preventative maintenance, and basic repair to heavy equipment and tools.
- Operates equipment including chalk liners, line painters, drags, blowers, mowers, line trimmers, field sweepers, pressure washers, and a variety of hand tools and hand power tools. Operates automotive equipment such as pickup trucks with trailer attachments, small dump trucks to haul dirt, gravel, etc., and as needed, small tractors with 3-point attachments, utility vehicles, and small backhoes.
- Prepares initial layout or set-up of athletic fields and maintains fields according to specifications of scheduled programs, tournaments, and events, including baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, football, races, etc.
- Operates manual and automatic irrigation systems as required. Assists in the maintenance and repair of irrigation and drainage systems. Reports problems to supervisor.
- Answers inquiries and informs the public of park regulations. Enforces park regulations to ensure the enjoyment of park users and the protection of public property. Responds to public inquiries concerning information about scheduled events. Requests law enforcement assistance to resolve problems as needed.
- Determines field conditions (i.e. playability of the field) for a rain-out report in the absence of the Athletic Coordinator.
- Inspects grounds, facilities, and buildings daily, looking for safety concerns and maintenance needs. Completes damage report and notifies supervisor of needed repairs. As time allows, assist with minor repairs to buildings, structures, and equipment involving basic building trade skills.
- Performs basic maintenance activities within trail corridors, greenways/blueways, trailheads, and ancillary park properties (utilizing ATC, USDA Forest Services, National Park Service, Virginia DCR, and/or IMBA best management practices).
- Performs forestry/landscape techniques and practices, including mowing, trimming, and weeding.
- Monitors trail and hardscape (bridges, water bars, walkways, benches, trash cans, etc.) conditions and plans alternative routes and/or replacements and renovation as necessary.
- Carries out maintenance plans, schedules, inspection programs, and other duties as necessary to support the department.
- Inspects facilities with Parks and Recreation and Public Works staff, ensuring compliance with safety and maintenance standards.
- Supports the management of and maintenance of park/ natural resource lands, including coordination of tasks with county, state, and federal agencies during normal daily and emergency operations.
- Assists with the rental, maintenance/ or use, and care of department facilities, properties, and shared-use sites on an as-needed basis; and provides support to a variety of recreation programs and park use activities.
- Required to work during athletic tournaments.
- Collects and/or compiles forms and associated paperwork as needed.
- Completes trainings and obtains certifications as required.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned.

- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- CPR and First Aid certifications (must be acquired within 6 months of employment)
- Must complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
- Before employment satisfactory checks on the following must be obtained: criminal record, Child Protective Services, Sexual Offense Register, driving record, drug and alcohol test, and employment reference checks.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- High school diploma or GED; some related experience or equivalent training.
- Minimum 1-year grounds/ parks maintenance required.
- Previous training and education in parks, trails, or athletic field maintenance preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Solid computer skills, including Microsoft and email applications, and ability to learn and use database software for the management of facility rentals and reservations.
- Ability to manage time effectively, show work initiative, and work independently.
- Ability to drive county vehicles and operate park maintenance machinery.
- Knowledge of turf care for various sports, and special athletic field needs, including field layout, set-up, and maintenance preferred.
- Skills and knowledge of irrigation and drainage systems operation, care, repairs, and installation preferred.
- Skill in interpersonal relations with County staff and the public.
- Skill in planning, organization, and decision-making.
