Job SummaryPerforms a variety of skilled technical duties associated with the operation and maintenance of athletic fields and facilities and athletic field preparation. An employee in this class is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, and supervising the activities of employees engaged in the maintenance of the grounds and facilities of a parks athletic fields and turf areas. Duties are performed under the general direction of the Parks Superintendent with limited supervision.Major Essential Duties
- Develop, implement and coordinate season long turf programs as well as scheduling application dates and activities.
- Plans, coordinates and monitors all turf/field care and projects related to Sports Turf/Field Management.
- Keeps informed on the latest developments in the Sports Turf industry. Reviews specialized publications and other similar sources in order to have a good feel of the development in the related field.
- Identifies turfgrass diseases, pests and weeds, as well as being knowledgeable of chemical labels in the related field to be able to control thresholds at a manageable level.
- Maintains comprehensive and accurate program, facility and activity records.
- Oversee and manage all aspects of the daily maintenance of athletic fields.
- Prepares bid specifications, and make purchase recommendations for turf care, equipment, supplies, etc. in the related field.
- Confer with other divisions/sections, agencies, etc. regarding Parks and Recreation/Sports Turf Management issues. Makes presentations on projects, programs, plans and activities.
- Attend meetings, programs, training, continuing education, etc. in relation to Parks and Recreation/Sports Turf Management
RequirementsEducation Requirements
- Education equivalent to that represented by graduation from an accredited college with three years of experience in turf-related field preferred; or two years of college or certificate program with an emphasis in turf management and five years of experience in turf-related field.
Minimum Qualifications
- Two (2) years' experience in community recreation, parks operations and sports turf management.
- Ability to report for work on time and perform job responsibilities in a timely manner in order to meet schedule timelines.
- Must obtain a Kentucky Category 3 pesticide applicators license.
- Performs related duties as required.

RelationshipsThe Parks Turf Technician performs duties within the Parks, under the direct supervision of the Parks Superintendent.Supervisory ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities may include the following in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws for all positions of county government under the direction of the Judge/Executive's Office:Supervise all staff and volunteers within the Parks Maintenance division which may include the following:
- Assist with hiring, training, development and work assignment
- Evaluate job performance
- Provide complaint and problem resolution
- Enforce policies and procedures
QualificationsEducation and/or Experience
- Graduate of a college or university with a BS degree, majoring in turf management or related field or
- Graduate of a high school or equivalent supplemented by five years of experience in turf management and experience in the renovation or construction of a turf related facility
- Proven leadership, time management and problem solving skills
- Strong communication skills

- Ability to maintain and review records and reports by subordinates of all activities and transactions related to the maintenance and improvement of the facilities and grounds of parks.
- Ability to assist in the recruitment of employees; ability to perform other personnel functions including training and discipline of employees.
- Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and corresponding safety precautions necessary for the safe performance of assigned duties.
- Ability to work and supervise under limited supervision.
