Brooklyn Public Library Services for Older Adults is seeking applications for our Senior Assistant program. Senior Assistants are a part of the departmental team to provide quality public library service and identify community needs to the Older Adult community. Administrative tasks and day-to-day activities include data entry; filing; maintaining the materials collection, preparing and distributing promotional fliers; answering telephone calls; and preparing correspondences. This is a part-time position. The schedule for this position is 10-15 hours per week, compensated at $15.00 per hour.

Responsibilities:
  • Complete data entry in Microsoft Excel and other internal and external program databases
  • Perform general file management and organization of office supplies
  • Checking in, selecting materials, and packing prepare materials related to the Books to Go (BTG) / Book by Mail services
  • Maintaining all bookshelves and weeding of materials
  • Process and link new applicants
  • Handle telephone calls, answers questions from outside patrons and transfers calls as needed
  • Assist program staff at Services For Older Adults sponsored events
  • Interact with SOA programming staff, volunteers, and the general public
  • Available Monday through Friday during the hours of 9:00 am 5:00 pm in the Services for Older Adults Department, housed in New Utrecht Library.
  • Performs related duties as required
Qualifications:
  • Prefer age 50 and older
  • Friendly, punctual and responsible
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work as a team, making adjustments to best meets the needs of patrons with and without disabilities.
  • A desire to work with older adults and people with disabilities
  • Ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written directions
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel
  • Ability to bend, reach, sit, and lift as needed
  • Computer skills required Email and Microsoft Word, Excel
  • Bilingual language skills preferred including Sign Language, Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cantonese, Mandarin, Bengali, Urdu, Polish and Russian
