Possession of a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED). 2. Two years of skilled custodial experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position. 3. Must possess and maintain a valid New Jersey driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. 4. Required criminal background check. REPORTS TO: Custodial Supervisor, Director of Facilities Management or designee. JOB GOAL: Under supervision of the Custodial Supervisor, in consultation with the School Principal, the Custodian completes daily custodial duties and responsibilities for district facilities. All custodians are expected to provide a healthy, safe and efficiently operated school environment. SHIFT ASSIGNMENT: Specific duties and responsibilities of a day (1st shift) and night (2nd shift) custodian will be assigned by the Custodial Supervisor(s) in coordination with the Head Custodian, Building Principal or designee. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Grounds: Daily: Removes paper, cans, and trash from the grounds. Keeps the playground equipment in safe condition. Performs proper grounds maintenance such as: mowing, trimming, edging, trimming trees and shrubs, weeking planters and flower beds, and other such related duties. Lights: Replaces burned out bulbs and tubes, turns lights off and computers in unoccupied rooms, turns out all lights, except for security lights and checks that outside lights are on before leaving the school at night. Knows the location of all light switches, fuse boxes, and breaker boxes, clean fixtures and lens annually. Custodial Cleaning: Entrances, Lobbies and Corridors: Daily: Empties waste receptacles, remove debris, leaves, and litter, dust mop floors, pick up soil from floor with dustpan, spot mop floors as necessary to remove soil. Vacuums carpet areas and mats, remove gum and soil spots. Disinfects drinking fountains. Cleans the entrance door glass. Weekly: Dusts the tops of lockers, fire closets, extinguishers and window casings. Cleans glass partitions, display cases, and interior door glass. Spot-cleans finger marks and smudges on walls, door facings, and doors. Dusts furniture. Restores floor finish on non-carpeted floors. Monthly: High dusts vents, lights, pipes, venetian blinds, over doorways, hanging light fixtures and connecting and horizontal wall surfaces. (High dusting above 5 feet). For stairways, cleans out the corners and the edges of each step. Removes gum, etc., with a putty knife. Damp mops or spot clean as necessary. Classrooms and Laboratories: Daily: Empties waste receptacles and replace liners. Cleans marker boards, chalkboards and chalk trays. Vacuums traffic patterns on carpets, floors, remove gum and soil spots. Dust mops and wet mop tiled floors. Cleans glass in doors and partitions. Locks all windows when you clean the sills. Cleans drinking fountains. Weekly: Dusts furniture surfaces and damp clean desk and tabletops (low dusting, below 5 feet). Empties pencil sharpeners, vacuum carpeted areas thoroughly, clean door surfaces. Twice Monthly: Restores floor finish on no-carpeted floors. Monthly: High dusts vents, lights, pipes, Venetian blinds, and connecting vertical and horizontal wall floors (high dusting, above 5 feet). Vacuums upholstered furniture. Office, Lounge and Conference Rooms: Daily: Empties waste receptacles and damp clean. Cleans chalkboards and chalk trays and dry erase marker boards. Vacuums traffic patterns on carpeted floors and remove gum and soil spots. Dust mops and wet mop tiled floors. Cleans glass in doors and partitions. Weekly: Dusts furniture surfaces and damp clean tabletops (low dust, below 5 feet). Empties pencil sharpeners. Vacuums carpeted areas thoroughly. Cleans door surfaces. Monthly: Restores floor finish on non-carpeted floors. High dusts vents, lights, pipes, Venetian blinds, and connecting vertical and horizontal wall surfaces, (high dust, above 5 feet). Restrooms, Locker Rooms and Showers: Daily: Empties waste receptacles and change liners. Thoroughly cleans and disinfects toilets and urinals. Thoroughly cleans and disinfects shower rooms and dressing rooms. Restocks dispensers: soap, paper towel, toilet tissue and sanitary napkins. Cleans mirrors, clean and disinfect urinals and stools, clean basins, polish stainless steel and chrome surfaces. Spot wash walls, lockers, and partitions. Dust mops and wet mops floors with disinfectant solution. Weekly: Damp cleans and polishes partitions thoroughly. Pours at least one gallon of water down floor drains. Dusts wall and ceiling vents. Cleans doors and wall tile. Twice Monthly: Descales fixtures. Scrubs floor with floor scrubber. Cafeterias and Lunch Areas: Daily: Clears drains of food. Sweep kitchen floor area. Mops kitchen area with a clean mop. Empties trash and recycling cans. Empties trash and recycling cans throughout the day, as needed. Cleans floor mats and replace them. Sweep/mop cafeterias. Cleans tables with a sanitizing solution. Weekly: Cleans kitchen entry areas as necessary. Washes trash cans. Sweeps entry ways and hose down with cleanser to remove food debris and odors. Washs floor drains--floor drains should be cleaned of food and debris. Monthly: Cleans vent filter, windows, walls and fans, light fixtures. Shop Areas: Daily: Empties waste receptacles and replaces liners, dust mop or sweep floors, and spot-mop floors. Twice Monthly: Dusts sills and ledges, spot cleans walls. Monthly: Mops floors with detergent solution and buffs floors coated with floor finish or wax. Gyms and Multipurpose Rooms: Daily: Empties waste receptacles and replace liners. Dust mops court floors and spot cleans using recommended treatment for dust mop. Clean glass in doors and partitions. Cleans and disinfects drinking fountains. Vacuums traffic patterns on carpeted floors, remove gum and soil spots. Dusts furniture. Dust mop and wet mop tiled floors. Spot cleans walls, removes graffiti. Weekly: Vacuums carpeted areas thoroughly. Cleans door surfaces. Vacuums upholstered furniture. Cleans all wooden and vinyl furniture (low dusting, below 5 feet). Cleans and polishes brass or chrome. Spray buffs tiled floors, removes scuff marks. Monthly: High dusts (above 5 feet) or vacuums vents, lights, pipes, Venetian blinds, drapes, connecting horizontal and vertical wall surfaces. Shower Rooms, Locker Rooms and Dressing Rooms: Empties all trash containers (including small pieces of soap and other debris). Relines containers with plastic liner. Sprays or wipes containers with germicide/disinfectant solution. Wipes dry with clean cloth or paper towel. Benches, Furniture and Lockers: Sprays or wipes (with cloth) with germicide/disinfectant solution and scrub or wipe dry with clean cloth. Spot cleans walls and lights as needed, replaces burned out lights. Replenishes paper towels, soap, etc. Cleans dispensers and locks. Showers: Wipes down walls with germicide/disinfectant solution and cloth, wedge mop, sponge mop, or brush. Lets the solution stay on walls a few minutes to allow chemicals to work. Scrubs or agitates solution to loosen soil and scum. Rinses with clean water. Polishes handles, shower heads, and other hardware and wipe dry. Cleans hair, etc. from shower drain. Sweeps or dust mop (treated) floor to remove large pieces of paper and other debris. Picks up towels, socks, shoes, etc. and stores appropriately. Lightly floods floors with germicidal/detergent solution and warm water, lets stand for 3 minutes or more for chemical action. Agitates or scrubs with wet mop, brushes (long handled), or power buffs, if necessary. Picks up a soiled solution with mop, squeegees to drain, or wet vacuums up. Vomit Cleanup: Cleans up vomit as soon as possible and always use universal precautions. If on carpeting only, uses absorbent granules, sweeps, then extracts with disinfectant and dump waste directly into the basin. Other Tasks: Opens the building each day. Changes ceiling tiles. Checks the facility to ensure heating or cooling systems are functioning properly. Inspects the building exterior for possibly unauthorized entrance and/or vandalism. Dust mops halls and cleans entrance mats throughout the day. Picks up paper and other debris from inside the building, parking areas, and school grounds. Sweeps entranceways. Makes minor repairs, and replace light bulbs as required. Keeps mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, boiler rooms and custodial closets clean, neat and organized. Cleans up after sick students. Assists in setting up and moving furniture and equipment for daily operations, summer cleaning and special events. Assists in receiving and moving deliveries of storeroom materials. Performs duties in the cafeteria as directed. Takes care of emergencies and any works as directed by the Principal or Head Custodian. Cleans and restocks restrooms throughout the day. OTHER DUTIES: Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by the Director of Facilities Management, or designee, and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education. This position is part of the Wayne Custodial-Maintenance Association. ANNUAL EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board's policy on the evaluation of non-certificated staff.
