Part-Time Elementary Literacy Tutor (Grant Funded) FLSA Status: Non-ExemptReports To: Building Principal Supervises: NoneEmployment Terms: Part-Time Position Grade: D/G4Position SummaryPerforms human support work remediating identified students to enhance the school's literacy program. Works with individual students or small groups, assisting students to reinforce presented material through special efforts and repetitions, preparing and maintaining files and reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the School Principal.Qualification RequirementsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.   • Coordinate assigned teaching duties with Reading Interventionist/Specialist and classroom teacher to coordinate instructional efforts.
  • Prepares lesson outline and plan for identified students and submits outline to Reading Interventionist/Specialist for review.
  • Plans, prepares, and develops various teaching aids such as hands-on manipulatives, reading materials, and writing materials.
  • Presents subject matter to students, utilizing a variety of methods and techniques for guided reading and guided writing using diagnostic data.
  • Attends training workshops.
  • Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts by:
  • Reading with children while reinforcing literacy needs through remediation
  • Closing readability gaps with individualized prescriptive instruction and programs
  • Modeling strategies for reading and writing
  • Writing the dictation given by young children
  • Helping children locate and use reference materials
  • Encouraging children to work independently
  • Assists Reading Interventionist/Specialist and teachers with routine tasks such as:
  • Organizing student information in portfolios
  • Gathering resource and supplementary materials
  • Using student information for planning
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in classroom teaching.
  • General knowledge of school programs and policies.
  • Skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software packages, hardware and peripherals.
  • Ability to maintain confidential files and information and to compile reports.
  • Ability to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to type and perform data entry work accurately and at a reasonable rate of speed.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and parents.
  • Qualifications, Education and Experience
  • A minimum of an Associate's Degree or 48 completed college credits or successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment.
  • Experience providing clerical support and working with children.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
  • Physical Requirements
  • This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force.
  • Work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting, reaching with hands and arms and lifting.
  • Work requires close vision, distance vision, color perception and peripheral vision.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
  • Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
  • Special Requirements
  • Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate postgraduate licenses, certificates and/or endorsements for the position required by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Position may require the operation of division-owned/leased motor vehicles; therefore, the incumbent's driving record will be subject to periodic review and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board's policy manual.
