Job DescriptionJob Title:Language Translator & Interpreter (Part-Time)Grade Level/Terms of Employment:Part-Time HourlySalary Range$35/ Per HourWork Location:Various LocationsImmediate Supervisor:Language Justice CoordinatorGeneral Description:The Part-Time Language Translator & Interpreter will advocate for language justice initiatives to ensure equitable language access for all RPS families and staff by managing and coordinating language support services, performing simultaneous and consecutive interpretations, and accurately translating written materials. The role requires strong communication skills, familiarity with interpretation equipment, and proficiency with technology. A valid Virginia driver's license and the ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, are also required.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Serves as an advocate for language justice initiatives to ensure equitable language access for all RPS families and staff
  • Manages and coordinates language support services by responding to requests from RPS staff
  • Performs simultaneous and consecutive interpretations for various events, meetings, and community gatherings.
  • Accurately translates written materials, including flyers, social media posts, district-wide announcements, and press releases
  • Works collaboratively with RPS staff and stakeholders to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all families, supporting the division's commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Utilizes interpretation equipment and various technology, including databases, Artificial Intelligence, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and social media platforms to perform language support services.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional growth and development by keeping current with the literature and new research findings.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Holds a Bachelor's degree in a foreign language or related field or three years of relevant work experience
  • Possesses full professional proficiency in English and one of the top languages spoken at Richmond Public Schools, with a preference for Spanish
  • Additional certifications in interpretation, such as a Spanish-English Translation Interpretation Certificate or Community Interpreter Certificate, are highly desirable
  • Experience interpreting in school or community settings and a solid understanding of linguistics, including language varieties and biases
  • A background in social justice and advocacy for underserved communities is preferred
