Position Type: Student Support Services Date Posted: 7/24/2024 Location: Union Academy - K-12 School Nurse-Part Time Job Description Position: School Nurse - Part Time No benefits FLSA Status: Exempt Terms of Employment: 10 month Reports: Chief Operating Officer (COO)/Head of Nursing Purpose: The school nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating health disorders among students and staff and provides instruction in the maintenance of good health and disease prevention. Evaluates the physical conditions of students and staff and refers to appropriate resources as needed. Decisions made by this employee require discretionary judgment and analysis. Duties and Responsibilities: Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address needs and changing practices.
  • Serves as liaison between the school and the local service agencies (public health, social services, and mental health).
  • Assists in the development of policies, procedures and work standards for the school health program.
  • Adheres to Union Academy's Health Room policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates the necessary services of the chronically ill students in the school and serves as a resource for teachers of students with chronic illness and health issues.
  • Assists with school health services, including health screening and immunization review, for the school and prepares reports as needed or required.
  • Serves as leader of communicable disease to control, limit, or eliminate the threat of any communicable disease affecting students and staff.
  • Prepares health reports for Direct Supervisor, Head of School, and School Board.
  • Provides first aid, physical assessment, and medically prescribed services.
  • Corresponds with parents to educate and provide recommendations for health needs of the child when seen and evaluated by the nurse. Documents all communications.
  • Develop and maintain confidential student medical records within FERPA guidelines.
  • Provides staff development on health-related topics for school staff and volunteers.
  • Implements Medication Administration procedures in school, providing needed medicine to students, education, and keeps medicine secure.
  • Provides programs for staff and students to promote Wellness.
  • Exercise discretion in discussing students with non-parental adults, including staff members.
  • Any other assigned duties.
  • Essential Job Functions:
  • Considerable knowledge of health disorders and treatment.
  • Considerable knowledge of child and adolescent growth and development.
  • Working knowledge of public health problems and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies.
  • Working knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services.
  • Knowledge of the school organization and the community served.
  • Ability to identify abnormal growth and development and symptoms of disease.
  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency, and other community resources.
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships.
  • Maintain a safe environment for staff and students.
  • Respond appropriately to feedback given by parents and students.
  • Completion of training necessary for licensing as a registered nurse and experience in pediatrics and/or public health nursing preferred.
  • Other Responsibilities:
  • Maintain regular communication with their direct supervisor.
  • Attend Staff Meetings.
  • Successfully work independently and autonomously in accordance with the Nursing Practice Act, North Carolina state guidelines and policies, and the School Board as well as in a team environment.
  • Work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Organize, prioritize, work under time constraints and to be flexible in an environment of multiple tasks and changing priorities.
  • Requirements:
  • Completion of training necessary for licensing as a registered nurse as well as a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Unrestricted Active Registered Nurse license in the State of North Carolina.
  • Current BLS Certification.
  • School Nurse Certification through the American Nurses' Association (ANA) and/or the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) preferred.
  • Experience in pediatrics and/or public health nursing preferred.
  • Minimum Qualifications or Standards required to perform essential job functions: Physical Requirement: Ability to lift and/or carry 30 lbs. Must be able to work in an office atmosphere for the duration of the work day. Interpersonal Communication: Ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information including giving instructions to subordinates and receiving instructions, assignments and/or directions from superiors. Language Ability: Fluent in the English language. Ability to correspond in both verbal and written communication. Intelligence: Ability to apply principles or rational systems as applied to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists, to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or scheduled form. Verbal Aptitude: Comfortable with public speaking. Ability to dictate correspondence. Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Numerical Aptitude: Ability to utilize mathematical formulas, to add and subtract totals, multiply and divide, and to determine percentages and decimals. Motor Coordination: Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and typical office equipment. Interpersonal Temperament: Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress. Physical Communication: Ability to talk and hear. Must be able to communicate via a telephone and a computer.
