A safe climate is necessary to enable the university to attract top students from around the world. It is also important to provide a safe and secure work and study environment that is free from concerns about crime and is conducive to the pursuit of a quality education. The public safety programs that are now in place were designed and implemented with this philosophy in mind.Summary of Position: WPU seeks multiple applicants for Public Safety Officer positions to cover the following shifts:Saturday 7:00 am - 3:00 pmSunday 7:00 am - 3:00 pmSaturday 3:00-11:00 pmSunday 3:00-11:00 pmFriday 11:00 pm - 7:00 amSaturday 11:00 pm - 7:00 amThe position will work approximately 16 hours per week. Reporting to the Director and the Assistant Director of Public Safety, this position provides public safety services to the University community. There are possible opportunities to pick up extra shifts when other scheduled permanent officers are not able to work due to being sick or on vacation. This position is non-exempt, and the selected candidate must be able to satisfactorily clear a complete background check. The department is also open to individuals interested in temporary/as needed employment to cover these shifts.Essential duties and responsibilities: Duties include but are not limited to enforcement of University's rules and policies; responsibility for preventing and suppressing crime, protecting life and property; patrolling assigned areas on foot to ensure personal, building, and equipment is secure; maintenance of patrol logs, recording of occurrences, and completing necessary paperwork; informing and warning violator of rule infractions such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles; and working with local law enforcement agencies. Duties also may require use of computers to input and retrieve data. Officers are expected to comply with the University's and the Department's rules, regulations, and policies; perform his/her duties independently, utilize proper judgment, and maintain a high degree of professionalism. This position is eligible for shift differential for hours work past 3:00 pm.Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent One year of experience in public safety or equivalent combination of related education and experience Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license Previous experience working with a diverse population Ability to maintain professionalismPreferred Qualifications: Experience in a public safety position in a higher education settingHours per week: 16 Job Posting Date: 02/06/2023 Priority Deadline: 02/28/2023 Priority Deadline Information: Priority consideration will be given to applications received by the Priority Date; however, applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
