Our Recreation Assistant II plays a crucial role in ensuring the well-being & daily care of our shelter animals, including cleaning enclosures, providing nutritious meals, & creating a clean, safe environment where animals can thrive. This role has a meaningful impact on the lives of animals & their future owners by facilitating adoptions & guiding prospective pet owners through the adoption process with detailed, compassionate information about each animal. Valuable experience is gained in animal handling & skills are developed to monitor animal health closely. All of this is accomplished while working with a supportive, knowledgeable team dedicated to animal welfare & community service.
On-the-Job Training: Our next Recreation Assistant II will receive hands-on training in animal care, shelter operations, & customer service, all while working in a safe & friendly environment. Our experienced team is committed to supporting new employees' growth & providing guidance in learning best practices for animal handling, health monitoring, & adoption assistance. Duties:
* Animal Care: Cleans & provides daily care to animals, ensuring they are healthy, fed, & housed in a clean environment.
* Adoption Assistance: Supports pet adoptions by helping prospective pet owners, providing information about animals, & facilitating the adoption process.
* Customer Service: Answers telephone inquiries, assists visitors, & provides excellent customer service to pet owners & the general public.
* Animal Handling: Safely & humanely restrains animals for various procedures, including medical examinations & vaccinations.
* Health Monitoring: Observes animals for signs of illness or distress & report any concerns to senior staff.
Education: High school diploma or G.E.D.
Experience:
* Previous experience in an animal care or veterinary setting is a plus but not required.
* Basic computer skills for data entry & record-keeping.
* Strong telephone & communication skills to effectively interact with the public.
Desired Qualifications:
* Proficiency in safely restraining animals for various procedures.
* Maintains a high standard of customer service.
* Communicates well with Animal Services patrons of various ages from diverse backgrounds.
* Demonstrates kindness to Animal Services patrons & presents professional attitude at all times.
* Must be able to communicate verbally & in writing.
Requirements:
* Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older.
* This is a non-driving position.
* Must pass a background check.
* Must have reliable transportation to-and-from work.
* Must be available to work shifts.
* Follows scheduling protocols & routinely obtains work schedule.
* Follows time & attendance guidelines.
* Adheres to payroll requirements.
* Attends required trainings & meetings.
* Reviews posted event calendars.
* Must be able to follow instructions & adhere to shelter protocols & procedures.
* Performs all job tasks according to rules, guidelines & expectations of Animal Services Manager.
* Responds in a timely manner to all forms of communication regarding City of Salina employment by way of phone calls, emails, texts, etc.
Work Type:
* Moderate, exerting up to 80 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
* Capability to stand, walk, & bend for extended periods.

Hours:
* Part-time position with 5-25 hours per week.
* Availability to work flexible hours, including weekends & holidays as needed.
Starting pay: $12.13 - 14.13/hr. DOQ
