Salary: $22.04 - $26.46 Hourly Location : Recreation and Cultural Services - City of Colorado Springs, CO Job Type: Classified - Part Time with Benefits Job Number: 16380 Division: Parks, Rec & Cultural Svc Department: Grants Parks and Rec Opening Date: 09/24/2024 Closing Date: Continuous FLSA: Non-Exempt Description / Position OverviewPART-TIME - Recreation Assistant I - Elementary School Program As a Recreation Assistant I for the Elementary Before and After School Program (grades Kindergarten through 5th) you will assist and support operations such as planning, preparing, and leading age and developmentally-appropriate activities for children ages 5 through 11 in accordance with the Colorado Department of Human Services licensing regulations and Recreation Services Program Standards. This posting will fill multiple vacancies. Open until filled. This is a .75 grant-funded position with the potential for extension and includes benefits. Schedule (may vary within the time ranges below) will follow the Harrison School District #2 calendar:
  • Before school hours
    • Monday (school delayed start): 6:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.
    • Tuesday through Friday 6:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
  • After school hours
    • Monday-Friday 2:45 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • The standard break camp (non-school day) schedule is 7:30 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. This position averages 27.5 hours per week with the opportunity to work extra hours. Additional hours may be scheduled as needs arise. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function in the performance of this job.Essential Job Functions - an employee in this position must maintain the ability to:
    • Assist and support with planning, preparation, implementation, and evaluation of age and ability-appropriate programs; ensure the quality of all programs
    • Positively interact with children; actively participate in all program areas
    • Assist Child Care Lead in monitoring and coaching staff in programs; developing and leading constructive and productive staff meetings
    • Observe and record children's behavior following Behavior Management Guidelines
    • Maintain open communication with Child Care Lead and Child Care Workers regarding program and participants
    • Comply with facility setup/takedown procedures returning program space as it was received
    • Help implement activities for special events and partner programs
    • Develop and maintain good public relations with parents/caregivers and staff
    • Assist Child Care Lead in providing information to parents/caregivers and children and ensuring proper compliance with pertinent City and divisional policies and procedures as well as State Licensing Guidelines
    • Assist Child Care Lead with CCCAP processes
    • Report accidents and behavioral concerns to the Site Director
    • Assist the Site Director with accurate and timely completion of the accident, program, and administrative reports
    • Actively participate in staff meetings and trainings
    • Attend all trainings and complete State Licensing certifications as required

    • Appropriate behavior management techniques and restorative practices
    Ability to:
    • Utilize good judgment in a variety of settings
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse populations
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing across multiple mediums
    Successful candidates will have
    • A high school diploma or GED
    • One year of experience of full-time experience in a related field
    • Possess or obtain within three months of hire First Aid and CPR certifications
    • Possess and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver's license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
    One year of relevant work experience may be substituted for one year of required education (OR) one year of relevant academic coursework beyond the minimum requirement may be substituted for one year of required professional experience. Based on the Department of Human Services requirements you must currently meet or obtain during employment:
    • Be at least 18 years of age, demonstrate ability to work with children, and must meet the following qualifications:
      • Complete the Department-approved course in injury prevention;
      • Complete the Department-approved course in playground safety for School-Aged Child Care Centers; and
      • Must have at least three (3) months (460 hours) of full-time or equivalent part-time satisfactory and verifiable experience with school-age children.

    Additional Information This position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally. The ability to work occasionally outdoors in extreme weather conditions is also required. Must have ability to visually and audibly supervise children in a variety of situations. This is a highly public position that includes contact with students, parents, staff, administrators, and partner organizations. Work may consist of ten (10) hour days in summer, with occasional weekend work as needed.
