Registered Nurse- Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

Core Duties:
Coordinate patient care in collaboration with a wide array of healthcare professionals
Facilitate the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to clinical care, quality, and cost effectiveness
Ensure compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all DHA and MTF established policies, procedures, and guidelines
Perform physical exam and health histories
Provide health promotions, counseling, and education
Administer medications, wound care, and numerous other personalized nursing-based interventions
Direct and supervise care provided by other healthcare professionals
Accountable for making patient care assignments based on the scope of practice and skill level of assigned personnel
Complete all administrative daily assignments/duties as outlined by department leadership
Recognize adverse signs and symptoms and quickly react in emergency situations
Communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of people for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization
Make referral appointments and arrange specialty care as appropriate
Conduct research in support of improved practice and patient outcomes
Documentation processing and attending to patient care comply with The Joint Commission (TJC) guidelines
Review, understand, and comply with established medical record procedures, regulations, and principles to carry out a variety of medical record functions such as compiling data, analysis, coding, and quality assurance
Comply with DHA and local hospital policies for maintaining a file system and updating records, which requires keeping weekly lists of all records and retiring records annually
Comply with DHA and MTF documentation requirements and policies regarding the release of information to outside agencies; prepare correspondence and summaries to a variety of requestors, such as the Veterans Administration Hospitals, Social Security Administration, and Insurance Companies. Employee must abide by the Privacy Act to determine what types of patient information can be released
Comply with DHA and MTF policy for return of records to the appropriate location
Electronic Health Record System- Mandatory use of medical database for keeping records, ordering of ancillary procedures, ordering of medications, writing doctor's orders, schedule follow-up visits and performing other required patient functions
Participate in quality nursing measures such as chart reviews, peer feedback, peer reviews, and suggestions to the Unit Practice Counsel representative
Comply with the standards of the Joint Commission, applicable provisions of law, and the rules and regulations of any and all governmental authorities pertaining to licensure and regulation of healthcare personnel and medical treatment facilities, the regulations and standards of medical practice of the MTF and the bylaws of the MTF's medical staff. Adhere to and comply with all DHA and local instructions and notices that may be in effect during the term of the contract
Specific Duties:
Perform duties in the specialties of PACU/SDS as prescribed by the regulation and/or policy. Assume the responsibilities of Charge Nurse if no other registered nurse is present, or if assigned those duties by the shift supervisor or other authorized individual
Perform pre-operative preparation, post-operative recovery and discharge within established criteria. Be familiar with IV Access, phlebotomy, and lab specimen collection
Be able to perform post-operative assessment, follow up and documentation
Knowledge and skill sufficient to interpret EKG patterns regarding life-threatening arrhythmias. Independently determines and implements proper emergency measures after identifying and interpreting life-threatening conditions for adults and children. Knowledgeable of the necessary actions to take to immediately defibrillate the patient who exhibits life-threatening dysrhythmias
Perform pulmonary ventilation treatments and administers a variety of respiratory therapy treatments prescribed
Administer oxygen, manages nasal-pharyngeal and gastric suction along with a variety of other drainage devices
Interpret, evaluate, and develop actions to be taken based on a patient's physiological and psychological condition
Utilize highly complex technical equipment such as invasive monitoring devices, i.e., arterial lines and cardiac monitoring equipment, maintains invasive monitoring lines, recognizes the malfunction of equipment and take corrective action immediately
Interpret special screening, developmental tests and laboratory findings in order to identify problems and plan nursing care and interventions
Knowledge of the use and effects of a variety of intravenous fluids, to include those fluids used to manage a patient's postoperative hemodynamic state
Contacting patients for pre- and post-operative management
Electronic Health Record System- Mandatory use of medical database for keeping records, ordering of ancillary procedures, ordering of medications, writing doctor's orders, schedule follow-up visits and performing other required patient functions
Knowledge of multi-service unit and varied departmental policies to effectively facilitate and coordinate he delivery of patient services
Effectively document care provided on electronic charting
Crosstrain and float to Medical Surgical Unit and/or Emergency Room during staffing shortage or needs
Participate in performance improvement projects, chart, and peer reviews
