The City of Jacksonville seeking a public servant interested in serving with the City's Telecommunications Division. The successful candidate has strong multi-tasking skills, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and has a passion for customer service. Telecommunicators perform on the job training in the technical work on an assigned shift dispatching police, fire and other personnel usually in response to emergency situations; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Communications Supervisor.This position is part-time averaging 20-25 hours per week with varying daytime and night-time hours based off monthly call volumes. There is NO set scheduling, the preferred candidate will be able to work varying schedules.During the initial training the successful candidate can expect to work several shifts each week during the day with a Certified Training Officer. Essential Functions/Typical Tasks Performs on the job training in emergency communications, answers 911 calls, communicates with police officers and firefighting personnel, conducts criminal background checks, dispatches emergency personnel and resources; maintains records; creates reports. - Receives and transmits messages primarily by radio and maintains radio log on shift work.
- Receives emergency calls, determines location and nature of emergency and dispatches appropriate personnel and equipment.
- Answers incoming telephones through administrative and emergency phone lines.
- Determines the nature of the call.
- Operates phone line for the hearing impaired.
- Enters the call into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and dispatches the personnel and equipment.
- Monitors separate radio frequencies.
- Handles paging for police, fire and special units.
- Operates DCI computer to communicate with other law enforcement agencies throughout the state and nation.
- Enters, clears, cancels and modifies stolen items and wanted or missing persons.
- Monitors alarms; dispatches appropriate personnel; enters information into alarm log.
- Maintains logs on public works problems such as holes in the street, water leaks, traffic control signals that malfunction, etc.
- Issues case numbers for police reports when requested by officers.
- Fills out daily report sheet for communication center activity for the shift.
- Performs related tasks as required.
