Job Description:

Job Overview: A law firm seeks a highly qualified Patent Agent to join its intellectual property team in San Diego, CA. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in preparing and prosecuting patent applications, with a focus on molecular biology.

Job Duties:

  • Effectively communicate, verbally and in writing, with clients, lawyers, business professionals, and third parties.
  • Produce high-quality patent application drafts and responses to office actions.
  • Maintain regular correspondence and communication with clients regarding patent matters.
  • Conduct prior art searches and patentability assessments.
  • Assist in patent portfolio management and strategy development.
  • Collaborate with attorneys and clients to implement patent prosecution strategies.
  • Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in molecular biology; advanced degree (PhD) preferred in molecular and cellular biology or related disciplines (excluding chemistry, medical device, or pharmaceutical sciences).
  • Registration with the USPTO.
  • 2+ years of experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications.
  • Prior experience in a large or mid-sized law firm preferred.
  • Familiarity with litigation, opinions, licensing, patent due diligence, and trademark matters preferred.

  • Education and Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (4 years) in molecular biology or related field.
  • A graduate degree (PhD) in molecular and cellular biology or similar disciplines is preferred.
  • Registration as a Patent Agent with the USPTO.
