Work Shifts 7:30 A.M - 4:00 P.M Job Description Purpose: Under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, physician, or other healthcare professional performs a variety of clinical and clerical duties associated with the care of patients in the Out-Patient Department. Specific Duties and Responsibilities: • Obtaining vital signs, heights/weight and head circumference (Pediatrics only), records results, and reports findings to licensed professional. • Assists in the preparation and positioning of patients for various tests and examinations. • Performs blood glucose monitoring, records results and reports findings to licensed professional. • Performs electrocardiographs and provides licensed professionals with documented results. • Prepares, labels, and collects various specimens for testing including phlebotomy. • Performs the necessary documentation utilizing manual or electronic procedures (EMR). • Monitors and calibrates clinic equipment such as blood glucose machines, scales, and refrigerators. • Assist in processing the admission and discharge of patients in the unit; assist staff with the location of charts (current and old), chart racks, x-rays, etc.; maintain telephone coverage on the Nursing Station by answering the telephone and delivering written/oral messages promptly and accurately; place and answer page requests for MDs/other personnel on the unit. Assist with informing patients of groups, medications, etc. through the PA system. • Demonstrates the ability to orient patients to their surroundings and provide a safe environment during the admission process, patient search, property check, visitor check. • Escorts patients to court, outside agencies, clinics, activities within the hospital and on the units. • Contacts engineering via phone call and Sprocket • Checks legal status, update the daily census, reminds psychiatrists about 48-hour confirmation status • Schedules medical appointments for various procedures and consults during the patient stay as requested by the internist • Schedules medical follow up appointments; fax discharge summaries within 24 hours of D/C to the outpatient psychiatrist and outpatient MD; Verify by a monthly audit. • Debride discharged patient's charts and take to medical records. • Maintains inventory of necessary stock and supplies, and prepares examination rooms appropriately. • Maintains Infection Control Standards to ensure patient/employee safety. • Performs the basic functions of a nursing assistant in the In-Patient Department. • Reinforces instructions given to the patient/family by licensed professionals. • Perform all duties in alignment with the mission, vision, values, and behavioral expectations of NYC Health + Hospitals. Minimum Qualifications 1. High school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization; and 2. Successful completion of a NYS Department of Health prescribed training program for Phlebotomy, satisfactory to the Laboratory Director; and 3. Completion of a health care setting-based training program in the performance of electrocardiographs and basic life support procedures including certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation. Special Note: In addition to meeting the qualifications above, assignment to a long-term care facility requires a New York State Nurse's Aide Certificate.
