POSITION TITLE: PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN/NURSING ASSISTANT
REPORTS TO: Unit Nurse Manager
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Professional Nurse and Licensed Practical Nurse, Patient Care Technician (PCT) / Nursing Assistant assists patients in tasks they cannot do alone. Patients may be unable to perform tasks such as mobilization and walking, bathing, eating, and communication.
SPECIFIC DUTIES OF A PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN INCLUDE:
· Specimen collection; drawing blood; obtaining blood glucose levels; obtaining EKG; taking vital signs; obtaining data for intake and output.
· Performing constant observation and proactive safety rounds, performing activities of daily living assistance; engaging patients in meaningful interaction and activities.
· Maintaining safe, clean, and therapeutic environments; responding to patient call bells; answering phones; property and environment searches.
· Ordering, maintaining, and putting away supplies; other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: H.S. Diploma required, American Heart Association Basic Life Support Certification required. PCT certification preferred.
Experience: Prior experience in a Nursing Assistant role in a hospital, nursing home, or ambulatory setting preferred.
Physical Demands: Must be able to lift or assist in lifting a client from bed to chair standing or vice versa. Must be able to respond quickly and effectively communicate orally in an emergent situation. Must be able to use stairs in an emergent situation. Must be able to walk, carry semi-heavy equipment and reach overhead. Must be able to communicate orally and in writing with clients or associates.
Special Notes:
* If a candidate does not hold PCT certification upon start date, he/she will be hired as a Nursing Assistant at the starting rate of $21.74 and will have the option to obtain PCT certification through Eastern Long Island Hospital's training curriculum. Upon completion of training, the employee's base salary will be increased to PCT hourly rate. Candidates with PCT certification and demonstrated phlebotomy competency upon hire will receive the hourly rate of $23.85.
* Employee must be in good standing for participation in the PCT Certification program. The PCT Certification program is scheduled on an as-needed basis, and participation will be evaluated when sufficient interest is shown.
