Collects financial and demographic information, and processes patient payments. Responsible for basic administrative and office support. Operates multi-line telephone system to answer incoming calls and directs callers to appropriate personnel. Hours are Mondays through Fridays, 7:45 am to 5:00 pm.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:* Welcomes and directs patients in a prompt and courteous manner.* Monitors visitor access and alerts appropriate personnel.* Provides supportive procedures for department staff, patients, and visitors.* Responsible for registering patients, verifying, and updating patient financial and demographic information.* Maintains a 97% accuracy rating on patient demographics and insurance updates.* Maintains scheduling system and follows office scheduling procedures.* Answers telephone and determines purpose of callers, and forwards calls to appropriate personnel.* Updates appointment calendars. Receives, sorts, and routes organizers as appropriate.* Participates in preparation, filing and maintenance of medical records.* Participates in daily charge posting including gathering, entering codes, and posting daily charges.* Reviews charges with patients and explains financial policies.* Accepts and records patient payments and obtains any 3rd party billing information such as Medicaid and private insurance. Provides necessary receipts.* Assists patients in completing necessary registration forms and maintains forms in an appropriate manner.* Responds to routine requests for information from patients and visitors.* Maintains work area and lobby in neat and orderly manner.* Attends meetings as required.* Participates in all safety in all safety programs which may include assignment to an emergency response team.* Creates and prints fax cover sheets, memos, correspondence, reports, and other documents when necessary.* Actively participates and is accountable for duties assigned that support the Mission and Values of being certified as a Patient Centered Medical Home.* Follows all CHS policies, procedures, regulatory and legal requirements.* Completes required trainings on time.* Other duties as assigned.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Skills/Abilities* Ability and determination to efficiently carry out Community Health System, Inc. mission statement.* Knowledge of office procedures in the healthcare environment.* Ability to work independently.* Knowledge of reception typing, computer operations, filing and multi-line telephone system.* Knowledge of all functions and related tasks in the area of customer service, e.g. walk-ins, appointments, registration, follow-up, and potential 3rd party reimbursement.* Capability to function effectively and calmly in an unpredictable and often stressful environment.* Knowledge of office procedures.* Ability to work while seated for long periods of time.* Knowledge of all functions and related tasks in the area of customer service.* Ability to use office equipment: telephone, computer, copier, fax, and calculator.* Ability to work independently and with others.* Ability to work under pressure and high stress, maintain personal composure, evaluate situations, and act/react appropriately and use tact in dealing with visitors, patients and difficult situations.* Ability to read and answer emails in a timely fashion.* Ability to identify and maintain confidential/HIPPA information.* Conserves organization resources.* Bilingual preferredEducation* High School Diploma or GED required.* Associate Degree in Medical Secretary/Medical Administrative Specialist preferred.* Specialized training in medical/dental/behavioral health terminology preferred.Related Work Experience* 1-3 years of Clerical or Secretarial experience in a healthcare setting with strong medical/dental/behavioral health vocabulary preferred.PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
