White Plains Hospital Job DescriptionTitle: Informatics Patient Safety Nurse Job Code: 300172Department/Location: Nursing Administration FLSA Status:ExemptReports to: Nursing Informatics ManagerPosition SummaryUnder the direction of the Nursing Informatics Manager, the Informatics Patient Safety Nurse promotes a culture of patient safety by utilizing their nursing expertise, technological expertise, and the Standards of Nursing Informatics Practice to support safe use of the Electronic Health Record (EHR), adjunct applications, and clinical technology. The Informatics Patient Safety Nurse serves as a visible and recognized advocate within the interdisciplinary team of providers, clinical pharmacists, care managers, advanced practice providers and clinical nurse specialists working together to plan and implement the most safe, effective, and evidenced based patient care.Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:
  • Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
  • Serves as a patient safety advocate and clinical role model in informatics.
  • Serves as facilitator of the Informatics Council.
  • Serves as a liaison between nursing/patient care services and the IT department.
  • Supports optimization of clinical workflows in the EHR, adjunct applications, and clinical technology to improve patient care and the end user experience.
  • Performs and documents workflow assessments through direct observation or interview.
  • Assists in development of educational materials for nursing and other patient care services departments. Provides on-going education to staff regarding the use of the EHR, adjunct applications, and clinical technology.
  • Participates in reviewing and troubleshooting incidents and requests in collaboration with WPH IT and MIT.
  • Facilitates discussions regarding optimization requests.
  • Participates in Montefiore Health System IT governance meetings as a WPH representative.
  • Identifies and monitors specific informatics metrics to improve patient care and the end user experience.
  • Support staff at the bedside and in opening service desk tickets as needed.
  • Participates in performance improvement projects as it relates to the electronic health record (EHR), adjunct applications, and clinical technology.
  • Participates in competency fairs and departmental meetings to provide informatics updates and education as needed.
  • Facilitates and/or participates in end user acceptance testing.
  • Supports and participates in regulatory survey preparedness and surveys.
  • Participates in and contributes to clinical review activities.
  • Performs collaborative reviews of adverse occurrences and near misses. Incorporates such into educational efforts.
  • Presents patient and staff concerns to the Nursing Informatics Manager.
  • Flexible in work hours to provide consistent communication and evaluation throughout all shifts to support 24/7 care. Work from home days available under direction of the Nursing Informatics Manager.
  • Provides direct patient care at the direction of the Nursing Informatics Manager.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
  • Education & Experience Requirements
    • NYS licensed RN
    • Master's degree in informatics preferred, BSN required
    • National Certification in Informatics (NI-BC) upon application or within 18 months of hire
    • Epic for the Clinical Informaticist Certification within one year of hire
    • At least 5 years nursing experience
    • Previous experience as a super user or subject matter expert for electronic health records, other healthcare applications, or technology
    • Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills and can interact successfully with all staff within the organization, physicians, vendors, and technicians
    • Experience with adult learning
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio
    • Significant exposure to and knowledge of hospital department operating policies and procedures
    • Previous acute care clinical experience and an awareness of how, when, and to what extent different hospital departments relate to and communicate with one another
    • Demonstrates accountability and professional attitude regarding personal schedule and work commitments

    • May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital's SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital's Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
    • Position requires ability to move about freely at least 85 per cent of the time.
    • Must be able to remain stationary for extended/prolonged periods.
    • Frequently moves/transports objects up to fifty (50) pounds and must be able to move patients of all weights with a minimum of one (1) assist or assistive device/equipment
    • Must be able to work in environment with continuous interruptions
    • Must be able to assess and respond to rapidly changing situational needs of patients, department and hospital.
    • Must be able to adapt in a high stress and fast-paced environment with multiple interruptions.
    • Must be able to detect sounds and respond to emergency sounds/signals at all times.
    • Must be able to constantly operate computer, equipment and other devices.
    • Position requires ability to concentrate on fine detail with interruptions and attend to tasks for more than sixty (60) minutes at a time.
    • Must be able to manage competing priorities.
