Every employee takes a person-centered approach that exemplifies the ICARE values (Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence) through empathic communication and partnerships between all persons.Job DescriptionPURPOSE OF POSITION:The System Patient Safety Officer is responsible for leading the system-wide vision, strategy, and implementation of patient safety across NYC Health + Hospitals. The Patient Safety Officer plays an instrumental role in overseeing these core functions of patient safety, including working closely with various stakeholders throughout NYC Health + Hospitals to develop and foster a culture of safety.SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Set system-wide goals and priorities for improvement in patient safety.
  • Collaborate with facility leadership, clinical leadership, and frontline staff to build performance improvement teams around patient safety in healthcare.
  • Facilitate PI teams tackling multiple complex, system-wide patient safety initiatives.
  • Identify, measure, and analyze key performance indicators for patient safety within the organization (e.g., National Patient Safety Goals).
  • Collaborate with Information Technology on analytics related to patient safety priorities.
  • Perform clinical duties including direct patient care and supervising/instructing house staff.
  • Supervise, mentor, and manage a staff person within Office of Quality & Safety, focused on patient safety.
  • Provide executive sponsorship for system Patient Safety Council.
  • Mentor, support, and develop facility-based Patient Safety Officers and Patient Safety Coordinators.
  • Support the System-wide Root Cause Analysis Review Committee, including providing day-to-day support and follow-up of the Committee's functions.
  • Lead the roll-out of large-scale patient safety initiatives including but not limited to RCA2, the Just Culture framework, Team STEPPs, and others.
  • Perform other related duties as requested by the Vice President of Quality Management and the Chief Quality Officer.ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
  • Ability to drive continuous improvement to improve overall patient care and organizational effectiveness.
  • Awareness of enterprise and hospital policies, and able to reinforce compliance with system-wide, hospital-wide, departmental, and unit specific procedures and protocols.
  • Ability to identify measures and areas that require improvement.
  • Ability to demonstrate success in designing and meeting key performance indicator patient safety goals.
  • Adept at data management and analytics.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills including the ability to set time lines and meet deadlines.
  • Able to handle multiple, complex patient safety improvement projects.
  • Able to set expectations, track metrics and measure outcomes, with the aptitude to communicate results, and create an environment for accountability and action.
  • Able to train, educate as well as demonstrate the use of effective decision making, critical thinking and problem-solving techniques, and utilize the appropriate tools.
  • Superior critical thinking and communication skills, both verbal and written.

Minimum Qualifications1. A Master's degree from an accredited college or university in hospital administration, health care planning, business administration, public administration or an approved related program and seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in health and medical service administration, public administration, personnel and labor relations, finance or appropriate functional discipline with an emphasis on planning, liaison and inter-organizational relationships, or related administrative or managerial functions; or2. A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in health and medical service administration, public administration, personnel and labor relations, finance or appropriate functional discipline with an emphasis on planning, liaison and inter-organizational relationships, or related administrative or managerial functions; or3. A satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
