BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

The Patient Transport Aide is an integral part of the team, the Environmental Services Transport Aide is responsible for activities that support patient-focused care within the hospital. Maintaining patient safety and privacy at all times during travel times. Patient, equipment, specimen transportation. Transporting patients throughout the hospital, in stretchers or wheelchairs.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Responds to patients' transport requests throughout the hospital with a sense of urgency, meeting their delivery goals. Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs
  • Perform clean-up of stretchers, beds, and wheelchairs according to established procedures. Be able to perform moving patients from stretchers, beds, and wheelchairs to hospital beds and vice versa with the assistance of a Nursing Assistant, in accordance with proper body mechanics and proper safe patient handling procedures
  • Transport patients on stretchers, beds or wheelchairs. Transport specimens, equipment, collect dirty equipment, i.e., I.V pumps, case carts and patient belongings in accordance to established procedures
  • To actively participate in orientation and training activities and adhere to hospital departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assist with patient discharges as needed to ensure patient flow
  • Assist with Environmental Services duties as needed
  • Monitors reports and corrects when necessary any unsafe of dysfunctional conditions. Initiate and follow up on requisitions for maintenance and/or repairs
  • Adhere to all policies, procedures and standards established by all regulatory agencies including but not limited to Federal State, JCAHO, OSHA, and CDC
  • To ensure patient safety, required to follow National Patient Safety Goals. Required to ask for two patient identifiers at all times. Utilizing armband for patient name and date of birth (DOB)
  • Obtain patient charts and test order requests according to established procedures
  • Understand the proper chemical/disinfectant/sanitizing procedures and comply with all infection prevention policies
  • Other duties as assigned by Management. Must be able to speak, read, and write English to communicate and understand department in-services and literature. Must be able to communicate with dispatchers and understand requests
  • Excellent customer service skills and work with minimal supervision. Additionally, must work well in a team environment

SPECIAL SKILLS OR EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Required High School or GED diploma
  • Required to be BLS/CPR within 30 days of hire date
  • Required to have excellent verbal/communication, listening and customer service skills
  • Required to service/quality-focused to meet a wide range of needs
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks and work at a fast pace
  • Required to display a neat, professional appearance with a smile
  • Must be able to work in a team environment
  • Preferred experience in a health care facility
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write English in order to comprehend in-services and department literature
  • Heavy physical effort, must be able to lift/carry/push/pull up to 75lbs
  • Prolonged, extensive & considerable standing/walking, reaching, stooping, bending, and kneeling

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Southampton Hospital's Employee Health Services*
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s)

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

*The Human Resources department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
