General Statement of Duties: Performs the basic functions of the Sheriff's Office including protection of life and property, maintenance of public order, prevention of crime, response to emergency situations, and arrest of law violators. Work is performed in accordance with the mission, goals and objectives of the Sheriff's Office, and in compliance with governing federal, state, and local laws.

Supervision Received: Reports to patrol sergeant or shift supervisor and is assigned in terms of overall objectives and resources available. Deputies may temporarily oversee the work of cadets, reserves and volunteers.

Supervision Exercised: As a senior deputy, may act as shift supervisor.

Essential Functions: Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all duties which may be found in positions of this class. The Montrose County Sheriff and/or Undersheriff reserve the right to modify or change the duties or essential functions of this job at any time.

* Patrols assigned areas for the function of crime prevention, conducts inquiries and inspections of crime incidents and accidents.

* Responds to complaints, emergencies, call for assistance, arrests or other duty with businesslike dispatch and courtesy, and without unnecessary loss of time.

* Assists in wild land fire suppression, search and rescue efforts, and medical emergency response. Administers first aid and CPR.

* Assists in resolving boundary and water disputes.

* Maintains a field notebook of current and ongoing information records such as wanted persons, stolen vehicles, etc.

* Notifies superior of major crimes or disturbances within assigned patrol area.

* Completes crime investigations and prepares case files for submittal to District Attorney for filing of charges.

* Prepare court and legal documents, inclusive with proper legal language and with no errors; examples include: search warrants, arrest warrants, affidavits.

* Prepares records and reports of daily incidents.

* Advises shift relief of daily business to facilitate the continuity of operations.

* May act as shift supervisor in absence of sergeant.

* Regular and predictable attendance is required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Education: High School graduate or equivalent. P.O.S.T. certification required.

Experience: None required.

Required Knowledge:

* Knowledge of local, state and federal laws, and city and county ordinances. Ability to memorize codes and ordinances.

* Knowledge of civil, water, livestock, fencing, and fish and game laws and statutes.

* Knowledge of child custody laws, and FAA regulations.

* Must have working knowledge of firearms and firearm laws.

* Ability to operate firearms, safety equipment, vehicle, radio, computer, standard office equipment, and other special equipment as necessary.

* Must be able to pass written, oral, polygraph and physical exams.

* Must have thorough knowledge of police tactics and officer survival techniques.

* Ability to make decisions in a timely manner under critical or stressful situations.

* Ability to understand and exchange verbal/written instruction/information and maintain a calm demeanor during times of crisis, and in dealing with persons who may be hysterical, abusive, incoherent, intoxicated or excited.

* General knowledge of math and grammar.

Language Skills: Must have the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and the skill to organize materials and present information clearly and concisely in verbal and written form. Must understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Must have proficient knowledge of the English language, proper grammar, punctuation and spelling in other oral and written communication and have the ability to write routine reports and correspondences. Must be able to read, comprehend and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies and standard operating procedures required for this position, as well as, basic how-to documents and manuals.

Interpersonal Skills: Must possess the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with fellow employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations and members of the community. Have strong customer service orientation and work collaboratively within a team environment. Interact professionally and diplomatically with County employees, other agencies and organizations and members of the community and manage difficult or emotional customer situations. Possess the ability to recognize when confidentiality is required and maintain strict confidentiality. Must maintain appropriate professional boundaries in relationships with customer/clients and the general public.

Mathematical Skills: Must have the ability to work with basic mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Skills: Must be able to apply basic principles of logic and reasoning to a variety of practical problems. Have problem solving and troubleshooting skills. Must be able to exercise some independent judgment and function under pressure. Must be able to accomplish assigned tasks to meet established performance standards and objectives and thinks through the consequences of a decision prior to making it.

Computer Skills: Modern office technology and equipment, including computers and related software applications. Learn specific software associated with the position and/or organization.

* Must be able to pass standard physical exam.

* Must have the ability to perform strenuous physical activities during emergency situations and training.

* Ability to sit for long periods, to stand and walk frequently, and run occasionally.

* Ability to push/pull, lift or carry up to 40 pounds frequently, over 100 pounds occasionally, 150 lbs rarely.

* Position is required to run, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.

* Ability to speak and communicate, including hearing and listening to maintain communications with employees and citizens.

* Manual dexterity required for operating firearms, two-way and hand-held radios, personal computer and other standard equipment.

* Ability to hear sounds at a distance, such as radio and alarm signals.

* Vision, including reading, preparing written reports and documents and driving.

* Ability to distinguish variations in color, to see near and far in both bright and low light, and to use peripheral vision.

* Various levels of mental application required including memory for details, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving.

* Must be able to utilize both the strong hand and weak hand to mechanically operate a firearm.

Environmental conditions of the position may include exposure on an occasional basis to fumes, odors, gases, explosives, and air/blood borne diseases. Work is frequently conducted outside in hot/cold temperatures, wet/dry conditions. Moderate exposure to loud noises.

Special Requirements: Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record. Must be able to pass written, oral, polygraph and physical exams. Subject to pre-employment drug test and criminal background check with no felony convictions. Must be able to pass a standard physical exam. First Aid and CPR certification required. Must be able and willing to perform shift work, including weekends and holidays.
