- The patrol officer is a sworn law enforcement officer of the City of Oxford and is responsible for the enforcement of all laws and ordinances whether local, state or federal.
- The patrol officer is directly responsible for the preservation of public peace and the physical security of the designated patrol area.
- The patrol officer shall discharge duties effectively and efficiently and shall carry out all lawful orders from superior officers.
- The patrol officer will be responsible for maintaining an updated knowledge of information on criminals and criminal activity in the city or in respective patrol areas and should make this information known to any superior or fellow officers when deemed necessary.
- The patrol officer shall be punctual for duty.
- The patrol officer is responsible for executing all patrol activities assigned including: law enforcement, traffic enforcement, building security check, escort duties, special assigned details, community relations, and any and all other patrol related functions.
- The patrol officer shall have knowledge of any and all facts of cases in which they are involved and be prepared for court presentation.
- The patrol officer shall investigate all citizen complaints and calls of all natures and shall take appropriate police action where deemed necessary.
- The patrol officer shall be responsible for contacting the appropriate superior officers in all incidents involving emergency or catastrophic situation.
- The patrol officer is responsible for maintaining a well-groomed and neat appearance. The officer is responsible for professional conduct during all dealings with fellow officers and the public.
- The patrol officer shall be responsible for the maintenance and custody of any and all assigned equipment.
- The patrol officer, when so instructed, shall be responsible for any other duties necessary for the efficient operation and well being of the entire police department.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONSOrganize and oversee projects as designed by Lieutenant.Perform other duties as directed.RequirementsMinimum Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesEducation:
- Minimum of 21 years of age.
- Have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED certificate. Some college education preferred.
- Be a United States citizen.
- Be of good physical and mental condition, and said is to be verified by a licensed medical physician of the employer's choice.
- Be of good moral character as evidenced, among other things, by a review of all criminal convictions, including traffic violations, and by having neither convictions nor pleas of guilt or nolo contendere for a felony or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude.
- Have the physical ability to pass a physical fitness test designed by the Peace Officers Standards and Training Board of Mississippi and administered by the Chief of Police or his designated agent, only after being deemed physically fit by a licensed medical physician of the employer's choice.
- Have a valid Mississippi driver's license.
- Be a certified law enforcement officer as set forth by the State of Mississippi Board on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training, and presently be certified as a law enforcement officer in the State of Mississippi, and show proper documentation of said certification.
Knowledge:
- Federal and state statutes concerning the work of the department
- General knowledge of operation of municipal government
- Strong background in facts of cases in which involved and be prepared for court presentation.
