Job Duties
The Patron Services Assistant serves as the public face of Preston library by staffing the circulation/service Desk. This position assists VMI cadets, faculty and staff, as well as the public, to check out library materials; to use library services, spaces and technology; and to find their way around the building and the VMI Post.
This position reports to the Head of Circulation.
Work Hours:
* This is an hourly position with a maximum of 750 hours per year. Expected hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and more extensive hours during the summer months as possible.
Essential Job Duties:
* Performs recurring circulation tasks such as:
* Checks library materials in and out for patrons
* Sorts and shelves library materials
* Monitor Hold and ILL shelves
* Restocks supplies of printer paper
* Assists in troubleshooting and incident reporting of library technology
* Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
* High School diploma
* Ability to provide outstanding customer service and a commitment to public service.
* Effective interpersonal and communication (verbal, written, listening) skills.
* Proven ability to maintain confidentiality, sound judgment, and discretion in all areas of work.
* Willingness to learn new skills, such as Library of Congress call number schema, the library's catalog system etc.
* Ability to problem solve.
* Basic competence with keyboarding and computer usage
Additional Considerations
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
