Department Summary

The Bioengineering department is one of the academic departments in the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering. Our research focuses on five dynamic areas: molecular, cellular, and tissue engineering; biomedical devices and bioinstrumentation; biomedical imaging; biomedical data sciences; and neural engineering. The department comprises 14 core faculty, 28 joint faculty, and a network of 77 affiliated faculty.

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Department Manager, the Payroll and Financial Analyst for the Bioengineering Department will manage payroll and personnel functions while serving as a financial analyst supporting the fund management team.

Qualifications

Demonstrated understanding of the organizational and operating structures of a University and its administrative units, academic departments and research labs. Broad based and detailed working knowledge of departmental, University and funding agency policies and procedures in order to manage the multidiscipline business functions of the department. (Required)2 or more years of demonstrated experience in fund accounting systems, sponsored research administration, payroll, purchasing, and other financial services. (Preferred)Demonstrated knowledge of policies and practices related to compensation, human resources, including relevant collective bargaining agreements. (Preferred)Ability to work with personnel problems calmly and diplomatically. Maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive information. (Preferred)Excellent interpersonal skills, communication skills, and usage of language to clearly convey information verbally and in writing. Skill in writing concise, logical, grammatically correct correspondence, analytical reports, evaluations, offer letters, and other written communication. (Required)Demonstrated excellent customer service and strong interpersonal skills to work effectively and build cooperative, effective relationships with faculty, staff, students, and senior management. (Required)Strong organizational skills to independently analyze, prioritize, and work with frequent interruptions to meet fixed deadlines and follow through on tasks to completion under conditions of fluctuating workload. (Required)Demonstrated proficiency in Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, email and other systems to manage, access, analyze and format data. Skill in using Excel to prepare spreadsheets when preparing budgets and financial reports. Skill in effectively managing paper and electronic filing systems. (Required)Working knowledge of online business systems related to HR and payroll: UCPath, Opus, Interfolio. Academic Recruit, People Admin, iCIMS, JDXpert, Tracker I-9, TRS (Preferred)Strong skill in math calculations managing general accounting functions: by preparing, evaluating, monitoring, overseeing, and reviewing fund allocations and expenditures; and reconciling ledgers to advise P.I.s, Project Directors, Business Manager regarding pertinent financial information. (Required)Working knowledge of University online financial systems, including but not limited to PPP, Financial Web Reports, CDW Data Warehouse, QDB, ERS. (Preferred)Ability to carry out special projects assigned by faculty, Management Service Officer. Ability to accept delegated work, validate expectations, problem-solve obstacles, and follow-up to completion and/or report status of delegated tasks. (Required)
