Job Description:

Peterson Cat has a need for a Payroll Supervisor at our San Leandro, CA location. The Payroll Supervisor oversees Peterson's day-to-day payroll-related functions. This position is responsible for directly supervising payroll personnel; ensuring integrity between the payroll module, general ledger module, and operations modules; and assisting with system upgrades, configurations, and changes.

Job functions include the following:

  • Supervise day-to-day activities of the payroll team, including, but not limited to semi-monthly, multi-state payroll processing; time tracking; and payroll tax compliance.
  • Review payroll calculations to ensure accuracy, and compliance with state and federal tax regulations.
  • Oversee timely payment of payroll tax deposits and timely filings of quarterly and annual tax returns/annual W-2 statements.
  • Supervise all payroll input, processing and paycheck distribution.
  • Oversee administration and payment of payroll deductions and insurance premiums.
  • Ensure the Company complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by keeping current on legislation and enforcing adherence to requirements.
  • Oversee prevailing wage compliance and reporting requirements.
  • Act as the primary resource for general ledger functions related to payroll, including payroll journals, accruals, balance sheet account reconciliations, and research of reconciling items; Assist with variance analysis and reporting.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to software vendors and participate in the implementation of Payroll, Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS), Information Technology (IT), and accounting system updates and changes.

A candidate needs an Associates Degree from a fully accredited college in Accounting or other closely related field; and a minimum of five (5) years of directly related experience in payroll processing, preferably in a complex, multi-division/multi-company enterprise with employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. Must have 3+ years of supervisory experience, preferably in payroll. Must display understanding of payroll-related financial accounting and management Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) Certification preferred.
