Job Description

SUMMARY:

The Department of Pediatrics and the Clinical Genetics Service, Department of Medicine, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) are seeking a physician to lead the Pediatric Cancer Genetics Program. The ideal candidate will be a physician who is BE/BC in Medical Genetics and either Pediatrics, Pediatric Oncology, Family Medicine, or an affiliated specialty with a commitment to an academic career in cancer predisposition, genetics, surveillance, and early interception.

This search is open to candidates at all levels of career experience, including candidates with a range of clinical and laboratory research focus. Appointments will be made at an academic level commensurate with the appointee's accomplishments and professional activities. The candidate will take over a thriving pediatric cancer predisposition and surveillance program, with further opportunities to grow by leveraging the department's clinical volume - the largest in the nation - with over 800 new pediatric and 2000 new AYA cancer patients each year. The candidate will also work within the Pediatric Translational Medicine Program (PTMP), which oversees state-of-the-art diagnostics for all patients, including universal somatic and germline profiling with panel as well as whole genome and transcriptome sequencing. Germline data from >2500 patients profiled with MSK-IMPACT and >500 patients comprehensively assessed using WGS represents a data-rich environment for research. The PTMP infrastructure has optimized biospecimen collections and banking which can be readily leveraged for cancer interception research and clinical protocols. Close interdepartmental collaborations enable the development and application of innovative new screening modalities (including imaging and cfDNA) for potential application to large cohorts of patients (e.g., over 260 patients with Li Fraumeni Syndrome are followed at MSK).

The candidate will be supported by the expertise and resources of the Department of Pediatrics and have the opportunity for joint appointment with the Clinical Genetics Service in the Department of Medicine. In this setting, the candidate will also work closely with the disease-focused and molecular diagnostic services in Memorial Hospital, as well as research labs across MSK, including within Sloan Kettering Institute (SKI), the Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program (HOPP), the Tow Center for Developmental Oncology (TCDO), and the Niehaus Center for Inherited Cancer Genomics. Physician-scientists have access to imbedded or dedicated laboratory resources in the Niehaus Center, HOPP, or SKI, depending on level of laboratory or computational focus and ongoing external funding. The Niehaus Center has current funded projects exploring modifiers of penetrance of germline homologous repair gene variants, targeting of inherited nucleotide repair deficiency, and developing of neo-antigen vaccines for syndromes associated with replication repair deficiencies, for example. Cross-departmental collaborative programs that provide opportunity for growth include the young adult population through the the Lisa and Scott Stuart Center for Adolescent and Young Adult Cancers (CAYA), one of the nation's largest retinoblastoma programs, and a multidisciplinary NF1 clinic.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Pediatric cancer genetics
  • Oversee departmental approach to universal assessment of predisposition, return of results, cascade testing, donor testing, and therapeutic recommendations.
  • Oversee approach and implementation of pharmacogenomic testing across disease services
  • Supported by 2 dedicated genetic counselors, and mentorship of clinical cancer geneticists

  • Opportunity to participate in clinical activites, including provision of patient care on a rotational basis with other faculty as it relates to specialty board certification (e.g., medical genetics clinic, pediatric oncology, etc)

  • Collaborate with or develop a vigorous academic research program using institutional data, research data, clinical research protocols, translational labs
  • Resources and protected time to support research and imbedded or dedicated laboratory resources will be tailored to candidate vision and research focus
  • Education and training
  • Participate in education of fellows, residents, APPs and genetic counselors
  • Opportunity to participate in formal educational opportunities within MSK, Weill Cornell, Rockefeller University, and local graduate programs that train genetic counselors

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Applicants must possess a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of New York (or must be licensed in another jurisdiction and be eligible for licensure in New York and New Jersey).
  • Have a Doctor of Medicine (MD), Osteopathy (DO) or equivalent.
  • Board-eligible or certified in Pediatrics or Family Medicine, Pediatric Oncology, and/or Medical Genetics
  • Eligible for appointment ranging from Assistant Professor to full Professor.

The Clinical Genetics Service:

The Clinical Genetics Service (CGS) in the Department of Medicine is one of the oldest and largest multidisciplinary clinical and research programs focusing on inherited cancer predisposition at a Comprehensive Cancer Center. A large clinical component focuses on diagnosis, management, and follow-up of individuals and families at hereditary risk for cancer. The CGS currently sees over 5,000 visits per year and includes 8 physicians and 18 genetic counselors as well numerous clinical staff. Faculty with primary or secondary appointments on the CGS have included surgeons, pathologists, oncologists, family medicine experts as well as other medical specialists. Clinical counseling is most often by telemedicine, however for assessment of most pediatric syndromes that may involve pleiomorphic features, physical examination is often required. The CGS has developed novel computational and web-based tools to assess patient's risk and triage levels of care including focused panels for germline genetic assessment. The dedicated research laboratory of the CGS, supported by the Niehaus Center, includes 4 M.D. or Ph.D faculty, 2-3 postdoctoral researchers, students, and laboratory support staff. It is has been continuopusly supported by NIH as well as other peer reviewed grants.
