Job Description:

The Perioperative Clinical Educator is part of the clinical education team with a primary focus on training OR assistants and LVTs in all phases of perioperative care. The Perioperative educator will focus on mentorship, curriculum development, lecturing, and implementation of an ongoing continuing education program.

The Perioperative Clinical Educator works in an LVT capacity approximately 60% of the time and oversees the onboarding, assessment, and clinical education of all staff working within the operating room at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center. The perioperative clinical educator will adhere to all policies and procedures as they relate to the safe practice of central sterilization, processing, proper use and maintenance of all surgical and anesthetic equipment.

Minimum Qualifications Desired
  • Current NYS Veterinary Technician license required
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as an LVT
  • Strong knowledge of operating room procedures and equipment
  • Ability to work and multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrate a high level of initiative independently and within a team environment
  • Demonstrates leadership associated with the core values of the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center
  • Ability to communicate professionally and provide effective feedback

Reports to: Director of Clinical Education

Education:
  • Associate or bachelor's degree from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology school
  • Master's degree in education preferred
Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as an LVT
  • Advanced knowledge of surgical equipment necessary
  • Leadership experience required
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support clinical education team in all facets of perioperative care
  • Provide training on maintenance of anesthesia machines
  • Proficient knowledge and ability to educate staff on patient preparation and positioning, soft tissue, orthopedic, and neuro instrumentation, aseptic technique, steam and gas sterilization, set-up for surgical scopes, portable X-Ray, C-arm, Stryker Integration System within the surgical area
  • Assist in developing, planning, and implementing training schedules, process improvement plans, and evaluations for OR assistants, surgery coordinators, patient care assistants, LVTs, and Veterinary Technician Interns
  • Collaborate with OR Manager, Clinical Educators, Surgery Team Leaders, OR Controller, and Director of Surgery to provide quality standards for patient care, and ongoing professional development to the perioperative care team
  • Provide leadership in cardiopulmonary resuscitation events and stabilization of critical patients
