Penn Trafford School DistrictHarrison City, PAPosition Title: Personal Care Assistant (PCA) Job DescriptionAdopted:Revised:SUMMARY: Provides one on one support and assistance to a student, including support and assistance in the use of medical equipment (e.g. augmentative communications devices; activities of daily living; and monitoring of health and behavior. Duties are performed under the direction of the building principal, working collaboratively with the special education teacher and/or general education teacher to help the student achieve the highest level of independent functioning possible when appropriate.Employees must successfully complete a district provided orientation and training program and demonstrate competencies with health-related procedures (First Aid/CPR, feeding, toileting, diapering).ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:The PCA reports to the Director of Student Learning Support.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:The Para-educator supervises students under the classroom and special education teachers' guidance.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk, and stand, must be able to sit and concentrate for extended periods of time and must be able to walk throughout the building without fatigue or discomfort. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, and operate office equipment, reach with arms and hands, is frequently required to talk and hear, and must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. The employee must have sufficient strength to physically assist students who may require removal from a wheel chair, change of clothing, range of motion exercises or other similar assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, far, and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Have a visual acuity and stamina to work with varied sizes and types of written material throughout the workday. Verbal stamina to articulate clearly and with appropriate volume throughout the workday is needed. Auditory discrimination sufficient to receive detailed information through normal speech at 5 feet and discern warning cries or alarms above normal classroom and playground noise. The employee must be able to tolerate stressful situations, while maintaining proper decorum. Have a visual acuity, stamina, and digital finger strength necessary to type at a computer monitor for approximately 25% of the day.WORK ENVIRONMENT:The noise level in the work environment is typical of a classroom setting; however the noise level in this position varies. When attending various activities the noise level may be loud, in the office, quiet and at meetings, moderate.
