Position Type: Student Support Services/Paraprofessional - Special EducationDate Posted: 8/21/2024Location: Chatfield High SchoolDate Available: 08/26/2024Personal Care Assistant- Special Education Support Staff General Definition of Work The Personal Care Assistant is assigned specifically to a student or group of students who regularly need one on one assistance to maintain appropriate and equitable participation in the school setting. Work is performed under the close supervision of the school principal, teacher/case manager, and nurse. Qualification Requirements To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Essential Functions Prepare, collect, and set-up instructional materials for student participation, following teacher direction. Accompany students to various classes. Assist students with van loading and transportation. Pushes mobility devices such as wheelchairs. Assist students in adapting to accomplish various tasks. Assists with technology aids for communication. Adapts the student's communication mode as necessary for instructional purposes. Assist with mobility aids including, but not limited to, braces, crutches, canes, walkers and wheelchairs. Transfers students using lifts. Reposition students in wheelchairs and other equipment. Notifies teacher/case manager or nurse of difficulties in carrying out their duties. Documents written records related to transportation, educational, and medical data . Adheres to the data privacy laws and confidentiality standards of the school system. Assists nurses with procedures related to necessary medical treatment, feeding, toileting, and personal hygiene. Assistance with outer clothing at the beginning and end of the school day, as appropriate. May attend students IP meetings. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the teaching of special education population; ability to maintain confidential files and information and to compile reports; ability to analyze situations and adapt if necessary to the surrounding environment; skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment; skill in the safe use of mobility devices, assistive technology, durable medical equipment, and lifts; ability to coordinate efforts and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, itinerant staff, parents and transportation personnel. Education and experience Associate's Degree; or ability and willingness to obtain the ParaPro test certification within 45 days of employment. Physical Requirements This work requires the occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs of force and occasional pushing of greater weight in assisting with student repositioning; work requires the ability to regularly push a wheelchair with an adult-sized individual; work occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken-word levels; work requires observing general surroundings and activities; work requires daily exposure to outdoor weather conditions during periods of transportation loading and travel; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (classrooms and school corridors). Special Requirements Ability and willingness to obtain the Personal Care Assistance (PCA) and Community First Services and Supports (CFSS) Training and Test within 45 days of employment. Provided training in safe usage of instructional, safety, mobility, and medical equipment and vans. Provided training in CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention. Understanding and knowledge, or ability to learn, basic ASL signs for communication is highly desired.
