Office of Conservation - Injection & Mining Division

The Injection and Mining Division (IMD) has the responsibility of implementing two major federal environmental programs which were statutorily charged to the Office of Conservation: the Underground Injection Control (UIC) program with federal oversight from the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) and the Surface Mining Program with federal oversight from the U.S. Department of the Interior, Office of Surface Mining.

Employees are eligible for flexible work schedules upon hire and up to 2 days of telework after 6 months.

LOCATION AND POSITION INFORMATION:

The Petroleum Scientist 1, 2, or 3 is located in the Injection and Mining Division within the Office of Conservation (OC) in Baton Rouge, LA. This position will serve as a Geologist performing highly responsible professional geological work of an administrative and technical nature pursuant to the Louisiana UIC Program and certain additional waste disposal activities permitted under Title 43, Part XIX, and XVII of the Louisiana Administrative Code. The primary objective of the incumbents duties are to ensure subsurface fluid emplacement regulated by the Injection and Mining Division (IMD) do not result in the introduction of contaminants into surface waters or subsurface geologic strata containing Underground Sources of Drinking Water (USDW). Additional duties include, but are not limited to the following:

* Permit applications for Class I, II, III, or VI subsurface injection/disposal wells require the submission of complex geological subsurface structure and isopach maps, stratigraphic and structural cross sections, fault plane maps, and hydrological maps from correlations and interpretations of appropriate geological, hydrological, and engineering data such as geophysical well logs, seismic surveys, geological base maps, well directional surveys, base of underground sources of drinking water, subsurface core analyses, formation tests, bottom-hole pressure and pressure fall-off tests, well and reservoir production histories;

* Review, evaluate and/or construct such geologic data for accuracy and compliance with the requirements of applicable rules;

* Serves as the principal assistant to their supervisor in coordinating and directing technical unit activities and managerial functions as they relate to the total geological program of the Division;

* Exercise lead worker responsibility through the mentoring and review of work performed by lower level petroleum scientists doing technical geological analyses and evaluations and on a project basis, sub-professional staff.

* Perform field inspections and well integrity testing;

* Provides guidance and direction on geological issues and serves in an advisory capacity during conferences and meetings with representatives of industry, the general public, Federal, State, Parish and local government agencies to resolve particular regulatory matters and conduct geologic and reservoir studies to investigate unresolved matters.

* Performs all other duties as assigned by the Petroleum Scientist Supervisor, Petroleum Scientist Manager, and Petroleum Scientist Administrator.

* This position offers premium pay for licensed professional engineers and geologists of up to $2.00 per hour for each hour worked.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A baccalaureate degree with a major in one of the following scientific fields: engineering, geology, geosciences, earth and environmental science or geophysics, plus one year of professional level experience in the evaluation of oil and gas drilling, oil and gas production and/or oil and gas transportation.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

A bachelor's degree with 24 hours in petroleum engineering or geology will substitute for the one year of required experience.

A master's degree or Ph.D. in any of the qualifying fields will substitute for the one year of required experience.

NOTE:

Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

FUNCTION OF WORK:

To analyze, process and recommend action on oil and gas drilling, unitization, production and transportation requests, and/or other related regulatory activities for the petroleum industry.
