Job Summary: The Pharmacy Purchaser/Buyer contributes to coordination of departmental purchasing in an optimal manner, including management of contract drug data base. Ensures appropriate purchasing requisitions per hospital protocol are utilized in a timely manner. Transmits orders to wholesalers and other vendors accurately and double-checks all items prior to transmission. Ensures ability to resolve problems with vendors due to back orders, shortages, incorrect item etc. Ensures accountability of items received and prompt processing of all invoices. Always contacts every possible alternate resource to obtain critical drugs in case of an item on back order or temp short . Works with pharmacy management to notify to medical staff, nursing managers and pharmacy staff of drug shortage issues. Ensures all borrowing and loaning are handled appropriately in a timely fashion. Takes physical inventories and uses purchasing trends to order pharmaceuticals from wholesalers. Closely monitors department want book to ensure that a reasonable inventory level is maintained at all times. Restocks inventory in all areas of pharmacy, as needed. Maintains security of all stocks. Continuously evaluates individual and group purchasing contracts and ensures that the items are purchased on the best available price. Ensures that all expired drugs are promptly returned to pharmaceutical manufacturers for credit. Minimum Qualifications: Associates degree and two years of pharmacy experience (in a hospital and/or State setting preferred) or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Excellent written/oral communication, analytical and organizational skills required. Preferred Qualifications: Pharmacy purchasing experience, Pyxis inventory management, and knowledge of 340b drug discount program strongly preferred.
