JOB TITLE: Pharmacy Technician IIDEPARTMENT: PHARMACYEXEMPT FROM OVERTIME: NoJOB SUMMARYUnder the direct supervision of the Licensed Pharmacist and according to law, policy, and standard procedures dispenses and delivers medications and pharmaceutical supplies. Compounds sterile, non-sterile and hazardous products as required. Fills orders, picks and delivers restocks for automated dispensing machines (ADMs); provides basic trouble shooting of ADMs and general pharmacy equipment and applications; pre-packs both hazardous and non-hazardous medications; enters charges and credits into computer, makes rounds to deliver and return medications and IVs. A Pharmacy Tech II must be competent to function independently in all in-patient areas and spend a minimum of 20% of scheduled time performing chemotherapy compounding. Additional requirements include annual completion of required organization training programs; completing department specific education; precepting new staff members or completing a pre-approved project that demonstrates a commitment to the education of co-workers or department process improvements; actively participating in quality, safety or cost saving initiatives or presenting an educational offering focusing on patient safety to the department.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation:• High School Diploma or GED (Required) Experience/Physical Requirements:Heavy Work: Lift 25 pounds manually frequently, >25 pounds lift with assistance and push 150 pounds on wheels.2 to 4 years experience. Demonstrates technical ability in managing the various pharmacy systems including the automatic dispensing machines, the pharmacy information system, the controlled substances safes, and the medications pre-packager. Maintains IV competency. Compounds sterile IV preparations per USP 797 and 800 guidelines. Follows all policies and procedures for sterile compounding. Able to meet all competencies of the Pharmacy Technician I in addition to advanced skills. Customer ServicePerforms job duties in a manner to consistently improve the patient experience. Assists the nursing staff with coordinating medication therapy to meet individual needs. Contributes to the efficient availability of the right medication at the right time for our patients. Master of correct usage of PPE and closed system transfer devices. Learns and maintains competencies in storage handling and disposal of hazardous medications per MHMC, state, and national standards and regulations. Assure minimization of medication waste by consistently accurate compounding. Demonstrates familiarity with high-cost chemotherapy mediations, reconstitution fluids, diluents, and tubing and filter requirements. Medication Specific History SkillsCollects complete medication histories from patients including over-the-counter and herbal medications and accurately records the histories in the electronic medical record. Compares information from patients and families to external sources including prescription fill data bases, physician offices, and previous histories to create the most accurate record available. Effectively manages up to the pharmacist when clinical decision making is required. Able to effectively triage during periods of high volume and determine priority of obtaining medication histories. Similarly, is able to contribute during low patient census by determining priority of other Pharmacy tasks and projects.
