Overview
Under the direct guidance and supervision of a licensed Pharmacist(s), and following all Federal and State regulations, prepares and distributes medications and maintains drug inventory and patient record.
Qualifications
Education:
* Education equivalent to graduation from high school or GED is required
* Prior Pharmacy Training preferred
Licensure/Certification/Registry:
* Possess a current State of Illinois Technician license or is able to obtain such licensure within 60 days of employment. Applicants may not begin work without proof of licensure application
* Pharmacy Technician Certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board-(PTCB) or the Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) is required by the second pharmacy technician license renewal except for:
* Pharmacy technicians who obtained initial licensure prior to January 1, 2008.
* Pharmacy students enrolled in an accredited school of pharmacy.
Experience:
Previous Pharmacy Technician experience preferred
Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
* Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication, problem solving, basic math, and customer relations skills
* Demonstrates basic computer knowledge, with the ability to operate keyboard and mouse and access and store information into an electronic database
Responsibilities
Organized and fills order requests in an independent manner in assigned area(s) of the pharmacy including the daily cassette fill and Preparation of IV admixtures. Upon completion, routes orders to Pharmacists for review and upon approval, delivers completed order to patient care units or otherwise notifies appropriate party.
Recognized controlled substances and maintains their security at all times, according to hospital standards and federal/state regulations.
Adheres to all necessary sanitation and sterility requirements in preparing, filling, labeling, and distributing medications and related supplies.
Repackages bulk packages into unit dose quantities as required.
Utilized pharmacy application software to generate labels, post charges, issue credits, run reports, and enter patient-specific information.
Monitors medication stock levels and requisitions or orders as appropriate. Advises appropriate pharmacy staff of depletion or low levels of medications and supplies.
Inventories and identifies expired or otherwise unusable drugs and provides for their safe disposal.
Maintains the appropriate online and paper records and reports for historical and auditing purposes.
Provides Training for lesser-experienced staff members as needed.
Serves as backup for other areas within the department, especially during times of special needs or staff absences.
Performs other related work as required or requested.
