GENERAL PURPOSE:
This is a line supervisor role. The technician supervisor will have the knowledge and skills of at least a Certified Pharmacy Technician on the career ladder and will spend a majority of time functioning as a member of the technician team. The assistant supervisor will have responsibility for assuring adequate training and management of training materials for their area of supervision, in conjunction with the Training Specialist for their area (if applicable). The technician supervisor will establish the work schedule for the area of supervision, and will conduct evaluations of performance. Responsibilities and tasks are consistent with state, federal and local regulations; and consistent with the functions of a pharmacy technician. The technician supervisor will have direct supervisory responsibility for the technician team in the relevant area of supervision under the oversight of the Pharmacy Technician Operations Supervisor. All technician dispensing and drug preparation activities must be under the direct supervision and approval of a licensed pharmacist, and this level of supervision is not intended to change that relationship.
**JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:**
**Pharmacy Operations:**
1. Fulfill the responsibilities of a pharmacy technician in the area of supervision with a high level of knowledge and skills. This includes the following:
2. Demonstrates competency in job specific medication delivery tasks (cart fill/exchange, narcotic delivery, standards delivery, etc)
3. Demonstrates competency in the set-up and filling of medication orders in relevant areas of supervision (robot fill, manual picks, narcotic dispensing, daily standards batch, oral liquids, IVA batch, etc).
4. Competent in the operation and troubleshooting of pharmacy automation in relevant areas of pharmacy operations (Swisslog, Pyxis, Healthrobotics, etc). Capable of using reports and other information to optimize performance of pharmacy automation.
5. Serves as a role model for excellent customer service in all interactions with members of the hospital staff external to the pharmacy as well as the general public including phone triage and etiquette, and service recovery.
6. Demonstrates an ability to retrieve information and effectively communicate responses to requests for information that do not require a pharmacist. Able to differentiate what does and does not require the involvement of a pharmacist.
7. Demonstrates an ability to troubleshoot problem orders or other issues and questions in eRecord.
8. Knowledgeable concerning pharmacy regulatory requirements and compliance with accreditation standards. Participates in Joint Commission readiness and other regulatory/compliance activities.
9. Knowledgeable and competent to provide operational coverage to all shifts in area of primary supervision.
10. Qualified to train technicians and assess on-going competency in all duties in area of primary supervision. Contributes to the training and assessment of all staff.
11. Competent to perform monthly unit inspections and document findings according to departmental policy.
12. Have adequate cross-training to perform at a competent level in at least one other area of operations in the department other than the area of primary supervision.
13. Able to serve as a leader on the shift, maintaining workflow, delegating tasks, and handling any issues that arise.
**Training and Quality:**
1. Coordinates the training schedule and assignments for all newly employed pharmacy technicians to assure an effective training experience. This is done in conjunction with the Training Specialist for the area of supervision, if applicable.
2. Assures accurate and timely documentation of all training experiences.
3. Establishes a process for on-going and timely evaluation of progress of new employees during the technician training process.
4. Coordinates with assistant supervisors in other functional areas to assure adequate cross training is completed and competencies maintained.
5. Assures all training materials are maintained and up-to-date for area of primary responsibility.
6. Establishes competency assessments for area of primary responsibility and a schedule for documentation of continuing competency for existing pharmacy technicians.
7. Identifies areas of quality, regulatory or operational improvement, and develops proposals relative to process improvement for presentation to the relevant pharmacy manager. Works with the pharmacy manager to implement process improvements in the area of primary responsibility.
**Personnel Management:**
1. Establishes a team schedule that is available to all members of the team within departmental expectations of timeliness. This schedule will need to be developed in coordination with other technician supervisors to assure adequate cross-coverage to meet minimum staffing needs in all areas.
2. Frequent interaction (e.g. daily check-in) with pharmacy managers and other technician supervisors to assure staffing is meeting minimum requirements in all areas of the department. When short-staffing situations exist work with colleagues to develop a plan for adequate and timely coverage.
3. Establishment and maintenance of positive team dynamics among the pharmacy technician staff through regularly scheduled meetings and communications about team performance, process improvement and overall team accomplishments.
4. Manages issues and conflicts that emerge in a timely and professional manner to quickly and effectively resolve problems that may disrupt team dynamics. Seek assistance from departmental leadership and HR professionals early in the process, as needed.
5. Serves as liaison between technician and pharmacy leadership. Bring ideas from staff that relate to process improvement and safety to leadership. Support down pharmacy policies and initiatives. (Work on from above)
6. Manages the interview and hiring decision process for pharmacy technicians, adhering to all university policies relevant to the interview and hiring process. Collaborates with leadership, as needed.
7. Conducts performance evaluations of direct reports in accordance with university and departmental expectations and policies. This includes new hire evaluations during the introductory period, annual performance evaluations, and interim evaluations of performance as needed. Responsible for completing employee evaluations. Seeks feedback from the relevant pharmacy manager, as needed.
8. Monitors time and attendance of direct reports. Maintains time and attendance documentation appropriately based on area of work.
9. When necessary, conducts progressive discipline up to and including termination decisions. All decisions related to progressive discipline will be in concert with the relevant pharmacy manager, associate director of pharmacy operations, and HR business partner.
10. Promotes employee engagement and supports employee retention efforts
**QUALIFICATIONS:**
Bachelor's degree preferred and 3 years of acute hospital pharmacy experience as a pharmacy technician preferred or relevant management experience in the health care setting or equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrates an aptitude and ability to effectively provide leadership and direction to coworkers and be of good moral character including application of ICARE values required. Certification required from a nationally accredited pharmacy technician certification program (Currently PTCB) and maintain ongoing education requirements required. NYS Pharmacy Technician Licensure and Registration preferred.

**Pay Range**
Pay Range: $25.09 - $35.12 Hourly
