JOB SUMMARY:
The Lab Phlebotomist - Ambulatory performs venipuncture, skin puncture, EKG, point of care testing, and registration in the ambulatory setting. Demonstrates excellent communication and patient care skills.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
H.S. Diploma/GED
CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
Basic Life Support (BLS) within first thirty (30) days of employment.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
6months phlebotomy experience or completion of Carle Phlebotomy in Training Program.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
* Attend and satisfactorily complete all required continuing education regarding the care of acute stroke patients

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Performs a variety of routine and complex blood drawing procedures including but not limited to venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures.
* Ensure quality by verifying patient identification and specimen labeling.
* Performs point-of-care testing specimen processing and EKG's in the ambulatory setting.
* Performs all tasks necessary to register patients and enter lab orders into the lab computer system.
* Participates in committee work, as needed.
* Perform inventory and audits, as directed.
* The Ambulatory Phlebotomy team services the South Clinic Lab, Heart and Vascular Institute Lab, and Curtis, Windsor, Rantoul, and Mahomet Labs. This team serves patients from newborn to geriatric in the outpatient setting. The Ambulatory team collects blood specimens for diagnostic testing, provides patients with collection containers and instructions, and performs EKGs and several point of care tests in the outpatient setting. The Ambulatory Phlebotomists collect blood from approximately 50-200 patients per business day dependent on lab location. Ambulatory Phlebotomists work every second or third Saturday at South Clinic Lab and cover 1-2 call shifts each week.
* Patients and specimens are identified using two identifiers: Name/Date of Birth or Name/Medical Record Number.
* Patient registrations and insurance entry are performed in Epic Prelude. Orders received from non-Carle providers are transcribed into the Epic computer system after state licensure is checked for the ordering provider. Orders entered directly into the Epic system by Carle providers are reviewed with the patient prior to release into the SCC Soft Lab Information System.
* Venipunctures are performed using a vacutainer needle and hub, a hypodermic needle with syringe, or a butterfly needle system. Complex blood drawing procedures include a variety of specialized blood collection kits for commercial laboratories and/or research. Blood cultures collected at Carle require Chloroprep skin decontamination at the draw site and vary from collection of a simple tube collection for Acid Fast or Fungal cultures, a set of Bactec blood culture bottles, or involve nurse coordination for a single or multiple-lumen port collection.
* Point of Care tests performed in the outpatient laboratory include iStat tests, Diastix urine glucose testing, and Quicktox urine drug screens. Recognize test result or instrument function problems that require additional troubleshooting, perform troubleshooting or seek additional assistance from the Supervisor or Lead as appropriate.
* Specimens are processed according to specific test needs. requireduirements may include protection from light, refrigeration, centrifugation, generation of platelet-poor plasma, freezing, room temperature or heated storage, and/or any combination listed.
* 12-lead EKGs are performed using a GE MAC 5500 HD.
* Successfully participates in all accreditation and other proficiency testing and annual performance competencies in each of the clinical laboratory testing areas. Participates in re-education or re-training as needed to ensure successful completion of all Proficiency and competency testing.
* Follows and maintains familiarity with laboratory and organizational policies and procedures. Reviews and records documentation of review as required.
* Complete Continuing Education as required by Lab policy and to maintain certification if applicable.
* Communicates information with internal and external customers as appropriate in an accurate, timely, effective and professional manner.
* Phlebotomists must demonstrate the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
