JOB DESCRIPTIONJOB TITLE: Phlebotomist/Clinical Laboratory AssistantDEPARTMENT: Clinical LaboratorySTATUS: Full-Time, Non-Exempt REPORTS TO: Laboratory ManagerPOSITION SUMMARYThe Phlebotomist/Clinical Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for identifying the best method for retrieving specimens, preparing specimens for laboratory testing, while maintaining top standards of safety protocol. Also, the Phlebotomist/Clinical Laboratory Assistant will provide administrative help in the Clinical Laboratory in daily accessioning activities. Performs pre-analytical processing of specimens and a variety of clerical duties in support of department. Performs some moderate testing with supervision.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: PhlebotomistVerifies clinical lab test orders and brings discrepancies to the attention of appropriate clinical staff.Verifies patient information with two patient identifiers.Deciphers best method for obtaining blood sample depending on the specific patient.Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and fingersticks.Disposes of contaminated sharps in accordance with applicable laws, standards and policies.Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating and noting times of collection; maintains daily tallies of collections performed.Maintains quality results by following department procedures and complying with legal regulations.Practices infection control standards at all times when working with patients and equipment.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Clinical Laboratory AssistantReceives sorts and performs accurate data entry for all specimens entering the laboratory.Receives and processes written/electronic requests from physicians for routine, STAT and/or special laboratory tests.Organizes work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling; sorting specimens; checking labeling; logging specimens.Enters patient data into computer interface for integration into the electronic medical record and retrieves data from the system.Follows appropriate handling requirements for specific specimens.Centrifuge laboratory samples as needed.Performs routine moderate complexity testing including loading samples onto the analyzer.Participates in competency testing in accordance with regulatory standards.Packages samples for shipment for specialty laboratory testing.Retrieves samples from in building patient service center daily.Performs a variety of clerical duties daily in support of the department including scanning, compiling tallies and reports, and filing.Answers, screens and directs phone calls received in Laboratory.Organizes laboratory area including general cleaning and upkeep.Other duties as assigned.EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an approved phlebotomy training course.1-2 years' phlebotomy experience preferred.QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:Proficiency in collecting blood samples.Must possess excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.Ability to communicate in a professional, courteous and efficient manner.Knowledge of laboratory computer preferred.Must have experience with data entry.Proficiency in Medical Terminology and previous related experience preferred.Ability to travel to all Premier locations as needed.Premier Medical Group is an Equal Opportunity Employer
