Job Summary: The Phlebotomist plays a vital role in patient care by providing expertise in blood draws and specimen preparation. This position requires excellent interpersonal skills to ensure patients feel at ease during the process, while obtaining sufficient samples with minimal discomfort. Key Responsibilities: - Perform blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging samples, and recording maintenance data.
- Collect and store specimens in accordance with established procedures.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods (e.g., urine or fecal).
- Demonstrate proper techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Fully comprehend and execute physicians' orders.
- Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes, ensuring accurate labeling, centrifugation, splitting, and freezing as required by test orders.
- Verify all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens appropriately for transport.
- Store specimen samples at required temperatures, using appropriate collection containers/tubes, and follow specific protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
- Adhere to OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and attire.
- Attend annual department training sessions.
- Answer telephone inquiries and read laboratory results as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: - Certification in phlebotomy or a related field preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications: - Previous experience in a healthcare setting.
Certifications: Phlebotomy certification (if applicable).
