Job Description:

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, the Phlebotomist is responsible for computer entry of laboratory orders,collection, processing and routing of specimens for in-house and send-outtesting, result entry and performance of waived tests. The applicant must have excellentcommunication and interpersonal skills, as well as a knowledge and experiencein performance of phlebotomy and waived laboratory procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include thefollowing. Other dutiesmay beassigned.

Perform computer entry of laboratoryorders and test results.

Perform a variety of phlebotomyprocedures on pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

Instruct patients on proper urinecollection procedures and appropriately allocate collected sample.

Order, stock, and inventory supplies forthe laboratory.

Operate various laboratory equipment.

Clean equipment and perform routinemaintenance of laboratory instruments.

Clean and organize laboratory workareas.

Maintain all laboratory logs andrecords.

Maintain patient confidentiality.

Coordinate daily communications oflaboratory with patients, physicians and other parties.

Participate in educational activities.

Perform other related work as required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Graduationfrom a standard high school or General Education Degree (GED) equivalent withsuccessful completion from a phlebotomy course or study. Experience in laboratory work involving mediapreparation and the use of a variety of laboratory tools and equipmentpreferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability toread, interpret, and comprehend simple instructions, (whether written orverbal). Ability to compose simple correspondenceand documentation. Ability toeffectively present information and respond to questions in one-on-one andsmall group situations to patients, third parties, physicians, and otheremployees of the organization; whether in person or on the telephone. Ability to respond to inquiries in a mannerthat the respondent can comprehend.Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries,complaints, and situations.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add,subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers,common fractions, and other routine mathematical functions.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability todefine problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw validconclusions. Ability to interpret andsolve practical problems with an extensive variety of information that dealswith several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to apply common sense,good judgment, and problem-solving skills in difficult situations.

OTHERSKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of laboratory procedures, set up and safetyprecautions. Knowledge of variouslaboratory tools, equipment, and materials.Ability to prepare media, solutions, etc. Ability to use and operate requiredlaboratory tools and equipment. Abilityto establish and maintain an effective working relationship with facultymembers, students, residents, staff, patients, and other third parties.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The workenvironment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounterswhile performing the essential functions of this job within a standard hospitalmedical record setting. Exposure to communicabledisease, blood, body fluids, hazardous chemicals, and sharp instruments. Exposure to injury from patients orequipment.
