Job DescriptionUnder general supervision of coordinating manager and supervisors) performs Network (Jacobi/North Central Bronx) phlebotomy procedures. Provides all blood drawing services to patient and clients (newborn, pediatrics, adolescents, adult and geriatric ages) for specimen testing and diagnostic evaluation. Cleans laboratory equipment and performs clerical duties in support of laboratory phlebotomy activities.Provide instruction for patients as required prior to the venipuncture (collection of blood samples). Follows procedures on positive identification of patient, two forms of identification, and perform the related activities in compliance with patient safety i,e. gloves should be discarded, tourniquets & vacutainers after each blood drawn. The venipuncture techniques are used for drawing blood on children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients Perform heel sticks for newborns and neonatal using proper technique as described in the Phlebotomy Procedure manual.. Prior to inpatient blood collection, labels are to be printed and put on the tube when at the bedside of the patient. Document patient collection of blood samples in LIS (Laboratory Information System). Perform clerical and related computer data tasks in support of blood drawing activities. Adhere to the practices of infection control and prevention that relates to all blood and body fluid precautions. Responsible for maintaining inventory of laboratory supplies and store appropriately as required. Coordinates specimen collection with other patient care units Hospital-wide and familiarize with the Pneumatic Chute system for delivery of samples to the laboratory for analysis. Perform appropriate techniques for New York State Department of Health newborn screening (PKU-Phenylketonuria). Perform related work in support of blood drawing activities.
Minimum QualificationsQualification Requirements :1. Graduation from a senior high school or evidence of having passed an examination for a High School Equivalency Diploma; or,2. Satisfactory combination and education, training and experience; and,3. Successful completion of the prescribed training program for Phlebotomist.
