Every employee takes a person-centered approach that exemplifies the ICARE values (Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence) through empathic communication and partnerships between all persons.Job DescriptionPurpose of Position:The Phlebotomist is integral to the patient care team by providing prompt, courteous, and customer-focused services to Bellevue Hospital patients or visitors while maintaining communication with interdisciplinary departments. The phlebotomist's role and primary responsibility is to perform safe blood collection procedures for timely testing, diagnosis, and prognosis of patient treatment at Bellevue Hospital Center. The phlebotomist must continually demonstrate various knowledge and competency of blood collection methods by performing and incorporating them into the duties outlined below (functional duties and responsibilities).Functional Duties and Responsibilities:1. Use two patient identifiers by confirming the patient's information on specimen labels and identification bands. As! the patient to verify their name and DOB before performing venipuncture or blood collection procedures. Notify the clinical team, manager, and DON/ADN of any discrepancies.2. Must always introduce yourself by name and title, explain the nature of the procedure, and provide instruction to patients3. Assesses patients' limitations and observes restrictions in place.4. Verify and obtain venipuncture/blood collection specimens by order of draw using the correct specimen tube, labeling all tubes at the patient's bedside, and promptly delivering samples to the lab.5. Monitors patient status and ensures patients' safety throughout the procedure; reporting any changes in patient' condition to Staff Nurse or provider (signs of vertigo/imminent syncope including pallor, perspiration lightheadedness, hyperventilation, nausea, facial droop, slurred speech, clutching of the chest)6. Ensures patient confidentiality and patient privacy at all times; uses discretion when discussing matters o confidential nature7. Copiously document completed and unable specimens within the EMR - EPIC/Rover efficiently and in real-time.8. Promptly and effectively communicates with clinical staff using EPIC secure chat.9. Sign into a Rover at the beginning of your shift and remain logged in until the end of your tour.10. Communicate with the team on any shift to perform second rounds on patient refusals or unable to obtain. Minimum Qualifications1. Graduation from a senior high school or evidence of having passed an examination for a High School Equivalency Diploma; or, 2. Satisfactory combination and education, training and experience; and, 3.
