TITLE: Phlebotomist/Lab AssistantDEPARTMENT: Laboratory/ClinicPOSITION STATUS/HOURS: PRN/As needed positionMonday-Friday with shifts between 6:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Non-benefit eligible positionJOB SUMMARY:The Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant responsibilities include phlebotomy, capillary puncture, specimen processing, and limited laboratory testing (CLIA waived). This employee is responsible for the management of laboratory functions which include the general procurement and dispatch of specimens, quality control procedures, and other clerical duties as assigned. The Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant identifies, prepares, and instructs patients prior to, during, and after collecting specimens. Also performs phlebotomy collections using patient age-specific assessments. The Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant complies with health and safety policies. ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Perform phlebotomy and/or specimen collection - such as: capillary collection; arterial puncture; and aseptic blood culture collection
  • Perform POCT testing in the clinic and be available by ascom phone to complete draws in Specialty areas as needed
  • Prioritize patient care responsibilities and give rationale for clinical decisions
  • Communicate patient information to physician, nurse, or other health care professionals
  • Demonstrate ability to adapt to emergency situations
  • Transport all specimens to lab department
  • Stock rooms and check outdates
  • Serves as backup to the courier making trips to outreach clinics and other hospitals as needed
  • Other duties as assigned - may perform some tasks to assist other hospital departments
QUALIFICATIONS:On the job training with MA or CNA certification preferred. MT/MLT students are encouraged to apply. Must have a valid Driver's License. Required skills include: ability to maintain confidential information; effective relationship development; ability to relate positively to people at all levels; excellent verbal communication skills; exceptional customer service skills; and flexibility for scheduling.
