Job DescriptionUnder general supervision of Laboratory management and technologists, performs venipuncture/finger sticks on patients to acquire specimens for laboratory processing/diagnostic testing in all sections in accordance with section policies and procedures to aidin treatment of disease. Labels and prepares all appropriate receptacles for blood collection. Observes patients/donors of specimens/samples during phlebotomy; initiates remedial action when noting adverse reaction/behaviors. Maintains accurate daily records of phlebotomy performed. Enters requisite data into computerized system and completes all relevant medical documentation. Sets up and prepares all relevant equipment and supplies. Maintains cleanliness of equipment/general working area; stocks area supplies. Ensures proper functioning of area; reports problems to supervisors. Supports area providing clinical diagnostic testing of all age groups in accordance with quality assurance/CQI and regulatory guidelines; may provide special blood drawing for pediatric patients (1-12 years) and oncology patients.Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, performs venipuncture and finger sticks to procure blood specimens for laboratory processing and diagnostic testing in accordance with established protocol and procedures. Performs STAT venipuncture and phlebotomy for special subjects (pediatrics patients, end-stage cancer patients) as required. Observes patient reaction/behavior during procedures in order to initiate remedial action or appropriately notify supervisors/clinicians of adverse reactions. Upon completion of procedures, competently swabs and bandages site of venipuncture. Remains aware at all times of patient emotional and physical welfare.
  • Under general supervision, labels all receptacles/vials for blood collection; stores specimens appropriately in refrigeration units/other storage areas. Enters information into laboratory information system and/or completes medical documentation in accordance with set procedures and institutional/regulatory guidelines. Organizes specimens on trays for processing by area personnel.
  • Prepares venipuncture and finger stick set-up prior to drawing specimens. Decontaminates all area surfaces and cleans all area equipment. Reports equipment problems to supervisors. Orders and restocks relevant supplies for venipuncture (syringes, needles, etc.).
  • Performs support functions maintaining work area quality; maintains files and statistics. May answer telephones for area and record messages.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications
  • Job requires a minimum level of knowledge normally acquired through completion of high school education in order to acquire basic foundation in mathematics/biology/basic writing skills; job requires some training in venipuncture and various methods of phlebotomy to ensure substantive knowledge of job safety features and basic understanding of physiological reactions to blood drawing, patient emotional reaction, etc.
  • Prior work experience of six months is desired in order to gain familiarity on-the-job with phlebotomy technique; experience in large scale healthcare organization or high volume production environment preferred to gain seasoned familiarity with processing specimens in production environment. Should be familiar with common methods of venipuncture.
  • Basic analytical skills necessary for awareness of patient reaction to blood drawing and procedures to follow when confronted with patient adverse reactions of where difficult patient subjects may be encountered (e.g., pediatric patients). Must be aware of the appropriate response to take when special incidents/specimen situations arise, notify supervisor, etc.
  • Good interpersonal manner important in order to ensure harmonious provision of blood drawing services. Must respond appropriately to inquiries from relevant clinicians. Should be sensitive to patient needs and welfare. When drawing pediatric patient or other difficult specimens, special care and patience required.
  • Work requires manual dexterity for effecting venipuncture and finger sticks; must be able to handle patients appropriately; must be able to use computer keyboard to enter clinical data.
  • Licensed/Credentialed as a Phlebotomist or EKG technician preferred.
