Above all, Vighter employees will be provided the same concern, respect, and caring attitude that they are expected to share externally with every Vighter Client and Customer.Summary:Vighter is seeking dedicated and qualified Phlebotomy Technicians to interact with donors to collect blood products. Performs duties daily in the local area and on a rotating basis in various sections to include phlebotomy, donor interviews, registration, vitals, and donor recovery. Phlebotomists rotate through various sections of the Blood Donor Center and on blood drives in remote locations. Independently performs standardized clinical laboratory tests and procedures appropriate to blood banking. Key Responsibilities:
  • Initiate human volunteer apheresis procedure. Takes donor history, temperature, pulse, blood pressure, hemoglobin, and initiate collection of single donor plasma and single donor platelets using apheresis equipment and standard procedures. Reviews collection kit to ensure all required information is present; determines types of specimens to be collected and if proper patient preparation has been accomplished; selects appropriate venipuncture site, cleans to ensure contamination-free field, taking into account any adverse reaction to cleaning solutions if indicated by patient or medical personnel. Collects specimens into appropriate anticoagulant, preservative or clot tubes as required by test requested.
  • Follows all regulatory regulations (e.g., Food and Drug Administration, AABB and College of American Pathologists) and safety guidelines for specimen handling and shipment.
  • Follows infection control regulations in handling, storage, and disposal of biohazard materials Must be able to explain the procedure for collection of specimens to the donor.
  • Process whole blood into components. Strips, segments, weighs and stores whole blood units. Records information, such as the time of started and stopped drawing blood. Manufactures packed red blood cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma, and recovered plasma.
  • Orders appropriate laboratory testing required in MHS Genesis, maintains supplies and equipment, maintains adequate supplies in patient care areas, monitors stock levels and expiration dates of available collection tubes and replenishing, when required.
  • Cleans and wipes equipment, monitors supply and pulls outdated stock. Assembles equipment, verifies correct instrument operation and reports defects.
  • Receives donors, visitors and answers telephone calls. Determines nature of inquiry. Directs the inquiry to the appropriate section. Takes and relays messages. Always maintains cleanliness and orderliness of the section.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Experience & Education:
  • Phlebotomy Certification is required
  • High school or GED equivalent and completion of a Phlebotomy program accredited by Joint Commission or CAP.
  • Must have performed 50 successful donor collections with an accredited laboratory within the last 2 (two) years.
Qualifications:
  • Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support
  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician, Donor Phlebotomy Technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology, American Medical Technologists or other agency approved by the Assistant Secretary Defense (Health Affairs), ASD(HA).

Duty Hours / On-call Requirements:
  • Generally speaking, this is a day shift position with duty Monday - Sunday (availability is between the hours of 0400 to 2200) as needed.
  • Normal shifts are 8 hours, and blood drives are 8-12 hours depending on travel time to donation location.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to sit for more than 8 hours per day.
  • Must be willing to work overtime if necessary.
  • Must be able to use an elevator or walk up and down stairs.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. and carry up to 10 feet.
  • Must be able to routinely grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbows/knees and reach above and below shoulders.
  • Must be able to read and interpret handwritten and typewritten print.
  • Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear.
  • Must be able to perform duties in an indoor or outdoor environment.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background investigation.
  • Must undergo Urine Drug Testing.
Travel:
  • Duty location is Fort Eisenhower, GA. Some light travel, up to 25%, on a rotating basis is to be expected.
