HOURLY RANGE:$20.57 - $24.95 DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves collecting, labeling, and transporting blood from patients at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC) and its clients. The incumbent checks quality of blood and is responsible for the safety and comfort of patients. This is a clinical medical position responsible for performing routine blood collection procedures in accordance with established standards and practices. Work is performed under the direct supervision of higher ranking clinical, administrative and professional medical staff. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Prepares and maintains blood collection equipment and supplies; requisitions supplies and equipment; reports on defective equipment; Collects blood from patients, labels, transports and stores specimens; Checks quality of blood and assumes responsibility for safety and comfort of patients; Consults with supervisor on activities, needs, problems and unusual cases; Performs all duties in accordance with established procedures; follows strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis in performing duties; Assists in the orientation and training of volunteers, students, and new employees, when requested; Maintains records, logs, statistics, and files and prepares reports on blood donations and related duties; Maintains all hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control standards and complies with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies; Travels to offsite locations to draw specimens, and transports specimens back to ECMCC; Attends in-services and meetings, as required; Provides on-call coverage as needed. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the procedures and techniques involved in the collection, labeling and transporting of blood; good knowledge of equipment and supplies used in the collection of blood specimens; good knowledge of aseptic and antiseptic standards and techniques; ability to collect blood specimens from patients in a safe, efficient and responsible manner assuring maximum comfort of patients; ability to maintain blood collection equipment; ability to maintain records, logs and statistics and prepare simple files and reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse constituency; tact; dependability; resourcefulness; sound judgment; understanding and pleasant personality; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of high school equivalence diploma and one of the following:

  • Completion of an approved course or program in phlebotomy; or:
  • Six (6) months of actual experience in performing phlebotomy procedures, or:
  • One (1) year of academic instruction in one of the following fields: nursing (RN or LPN), medical technology, or medicine.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid New York State driver's license and a vehicle for use at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment. NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.@Approved by Erie County
