Job Type Part-timeDescriptionPURPOSE STATEMENTAs a Clinic Phlebotomist, the expectation is that the employee will maintain a high degree of professionalism and ethics and will maintain strict confidentiality as dictated by HIPAA. The Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant, under the supervision of the Clinic Manager, is responsible for aiding in the delivery of health care by obtaining specimens of bodily fluids from patients and processing them for testing or transport to reference laboratories.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Obtain laboratory specimens from patients as directed.
  • Transport specimens safely and without delay to proper laboratory for testing.
  • Ensure all specimens are clearly and properly labeled and sent to billing correctly.
  • Maintain laboratory records, informs appropriate physician of results, and phones or mails results to patients as directed.
  • Prepare, clean, and maintain supplies in drawing area(s) and nursing stations.
  • Assist with scheduling tests and treatments.
  • Collaborate with the patient, physician, and other care team members in assessing the patient's progress toward individual health care goals.
  • Create, copy, file and maintain patient files, records, and other information.
  • Compile and condense technical and statistical data for reports and records.
  • Participate in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
  • Attend regular meetings and/or training for business staff. Also contribute/attend full-team meetings of the entire staff and is involved in evaluating the performance of the Care Team and all quality improvement activities.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Treat staff, physicians, visitors and patients with dignity and respect.
  • Knowledge of medical practice and care.
  • Knowledge of correct procedures for individual tests.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing kits.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions.
  • Knowledge of good infection control and sterilization procedures.
  • Ability to obtain specimens without harming or endangering the patient.
  • Ability to maintain records and record test results.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining clinical quality assurance.
  • Skill in identifying and resolving problems.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to use good reasoning and judgment and react calmly in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients. Medical staff, coworkers and the public.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in operating a computer.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Perform other essential duties as assigned.
Shift Requirements
  • Saturday and Sunday.
  • 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
RequirementsEDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of medical experience in a laboratory or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Medical assistant or phlebotomy certification preferred.
  • Excellent customer relation skills-Ability to communicate well under stressful conditions both on the telephone and in face-to-face encounters.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records-good organizational skills.
  • Able to concentrate and complete detailed work despite frequent interruptions.
  • Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within the established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the hospital/clinic.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to sit and stand, intermittent 8 to 10 hours a day.
  • Must be able to use standard office equipment, including the telephone and computer keyboard.
  • Continuously works under pressure of near 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines.
  • Continuously utilizes manual/bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing.
  • Frequently stands, walks, sits and utilizes eye/hand coordination and color definition.
  • Occasionally reaches above shoulder, regularly required to life and/or carry up to 100 lbs.
  • Occasionally walks on uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to travel 0-5% of the time, including flying and driving rental cars.
  • To accommodate travel, must be able to transport own suitcases and portable computer estimated at 25 pounds.
  • Occasionally relocate to other jobs.
  • Maintain professional certification.
  • Maintain a current and valid driver's license.
