About Our ProgramThe program serves the educational needs of delbrook residents as well as day students from surrounding communities. With an emphasis on autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), we provide programming appropriate for students with a variety of learning, communication, social, behavioral and intellectual challenges. Our Cromwell location provides each student with a positive, individualized and highly engaging educational experience. In addition to the Extended School Year (ESY), we offer an Extended Day Program (EDP) throughout the school year.Job Summary:The physical education teacher is responsible to strengthen a student's physical, behavioral, emotional, social and academic skills to enable the student to recognize the importance of participating in physical activities that are designed to maintain and enhance healthy lifestyles. The physical education teacher implements a physical education program and health program that will facilitate the treatment process in conjunction with the student's IEP. This is a full-time, 219 day, exempt position that reports directly to the Director of Education.Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Observes student's fine and gross motor skills to ascertain individual strengths and needs that should be addressed during physical education.
  • Develops a curriculum that addresses the areas of physical activity, human movement, fitness, responsible behavior, the benefits of physical activity and healthy choices that aligns with CT SDE guidelines.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of the school-wide behavior management system used in the Learning Center.
  • Establishes a safe and secure learning environment in which students will exhibit responsible personal and social behaviors during physical activity and health instruction.
  • Reviews each student's progress and document through report cards, and when indicated provides progress monitoring for the IEP.
  • Provides updated progress reports for PPT meetings as requested by the Director of Education, team members, LEA, DCF, or parents.
  • Communicates within the interdisciplinary framework of the agency and complete a report when involved in a critical incident.
  • Collaborates with the special education teacher and other school staff who are part of each student's team.
  • Actively participates in all school functions and assists with planning events scheduled by the Learning Center.
  • Participates in therapeutic holds when a student is at risk of injuring him/herself or others.
  • Participates in all student-centered meetings when requested to do so by the Director of Education.
  • Is familiar with Learning Center and agency policies and procedures.
  • Participates in staff meetings and professional development and provides staff development when requested.
  • Displays exemplary role modeling while working with students and staff.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Director of Education and/or Vice President for Education.
Education, Experience and other Qualifications:B.A./B.S. Degree in Physical Education from an accredited college or university and Connecticut State Certification in Physical Education and Health are required.Two years in a regular or special education school desired. Must have a willingness and ability to learn and carry out functions of a behavior management system. Must be able to function as part of a team and to demonstrate flexibility in meeting program needs as they occur. Must participate in agency training in CPR, PMT, mandated reporting and professional boundaries. Must have a positive attitude, demonstrated good judgement and ability to establish a rapport with students, colleagues, staff and families from diverse ethnic, economic, educational and religious backgrounds.A commitment to working positively as part of an interdisciplinary team is required.Commitment to the CT Code of Responsibility for Teachers is required.delbrook is committed to programs of Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action.
