REPORTS TO:Physical Therapist / Practice Manager

PAY RANGE:$26.00 - $30.00 per hour

WORK SCHEDULE:Full-time, 37.5 hours per week. Weekdays only. No evenings, weekends, or major holidays.

POSITION SUMMARY:The Physical Therapist Assistant works under the supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist to assist in providing high-quality, compassionate physical therapy services to patients. This involves implementing treatment plans, educating patients, and supporting the physical therapy team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists in the implementation of individualized treatment plans designed by the Physical Therapist. Provides hands-on therapeutic interventions, including exercises, manual therapy, and modalities.

  • Educates patients and their families on exercise techniques, home care routines, and lifestyle modifications to support rehabilitation goals.

  • Instructs patients/families in the application, care, and precautions of orthotic and prosthetic devices, as directed by the Physical Therapist.

  • Prepares and maintains therapeutic equipment, ensuring all equipment is clean, in good working condition, and used appropriately.

  • Ensures a safe and clean environment, including equipment and laundry, for patients and staff, following infection control protocols, safety procedures, and equipment vendor recommendations.

  • Collaborates with the Physical Therapist on issues of patient progression, ideas or variations of treatment, patient/family education, and any other concerns or issues that may arise.

  • Communicates openly with and guides fellow employees, volunteers, students, and visitors

  • Seeks assistance from the Physical Therapist, as needed.

  • Maintains appropriate professional boundaries.

  • Completes thorough and timely documentation of all patient encounters, including but not limited to patient progress, treatment responses, and any changes in patient condition per facility and state guidelines.

  • Participates in Quality or Performance Improvement initiatives and/or serves on committees as requested by supervisor.

  • Schedules patients and ensures transportation through Medical Answering Service (MAS), as appropriate and per patient needs.

  • Coordinates with the physical therapist, equipment vendor(s), and patients to schedule patient evaluation of equipment needs.

  • Tracks outstanding durable medical equipment and communicates with vendors.

  • Inventories supplies and places orders as needed.

  • Monitors expiration checklists and logs equipment temperatures, as appropriate. Follows up on any issues identified.

  • Coordinates with Training & Development Manager and conducts Ergonomics training for agency employees. This may include occasional travel to other agency locations.

  • Performs duties according to the highest ethical and moral standards, and following the agency's corporate compliance plan and all applicable governing laws.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor(s).

Requirements

  • Current New York State Physical Therapy Assistant license and registration certificate.

  • Graduate of an Associate Degree Physical Therapist Assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) or an appropriate equivalent as determined by the New York State Education Department.

  • Previous experience in a clinical setting is preferred but not required. New graduates are welcome to apply.

  • Basic Life Support certification is required. Training can be provided at hire.

  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality in dealing with patient information and/or issues.

  • Excellent organizational, computer, and information management skills.

  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with others.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Knowledge of and/or experience with federally qualified health centers is preferred.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs., lift and support patients with and without help.

  • Ability to walk, stand, and demonstrate exercise for extended periods.

  • Regular exposure to infectious diseases, blood and airborne pathogens, needle sticks, hygiene issues, and other odors.

  • Able to tolerate clinical smells.

  • Ability to read digital readouts, recognize colors, and operate necessary medical equipment.

  • Ability to operate mechanical devices used by patients.

  • Ability to wear necessary hospital masks, gowns, gloves, and close-toed shoes.
